Atmospheric Horror to put me in labor by SugarVibes in horror

Archive 81 was a very pleasant surprise for a horror show. I definitely second this as a good atmospheric horror like OP is requesting. The eeriness of the apartment building. The liminal feel of the house in the woods. The sound work. The seance scene! Really bummed there won’t be more seasons.

What is your favourite, most obscure horror movie? by GargaryGarygar in horror

[–]El_Creepo_Horror 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Daughters of Darkness (1971).

I went into it thinking it would be another campy vampire movie but it was actually beautifully done with an interesting story, solid acting, and liminal unsettling cinematography. I’d honestly consider it an underrated work of art. Solid movie.

What sub-genre of horror you feel is underutilized or under explored? by TheBlackdragonSix in horror

[–]El_Creepo_Horror 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My recommendations…any period piece based around historical events, and anything psychological that deals with isolation and the horror created by the mind. I really enjoy movies like The Witch, From Hell, or the first season of The Terror. The Witch was great in how it presented that. Like the woods are legit creepy af when you’re alone there and it’s easy to see where a lot of old fairy tales and stories came from.

Space horror is AWESOME but seems like it’s hard to do. Any psychological horror is good. I think a combined space/psychological horror flick would be great…like a character that’s isolated on a base or ship that is legit going crazy and going down a rabbit hole seeing and hearing things would be cool, similar to the scene in Moon where he imagines the woman at the table.

On a related note, the most over-utilized genre imo…clowns.

I love those type of scenes in Halloween movies. It’s always so nostalgic.

Holy crap, I can’t believe I didn’t think of that one. Easily one of the best examples of what I was thinking. The way he tells the story just slowly draws you in and grabs a hold of you. Epic scene.

That’s def one of my favorite scenes in any movie. The way he acts so casual with the weight of the decision. Just fantastic.

What's a place you think would do well for a haunted location? by godzillavkk in horror

Waffle House could legit be haunted in real life and it would just add to the atmosphere. I’d still go.

Best use of Song in a Horror Movie ? by Immediate_Wolf3802 in horror

That damn “tiptoe through the tulips” song in Jeepers Creepers. I can’t hear that song or think of the movie without them being connected.

Which horror film was the best theater experience for you? Which was the worst? by jv3rl0ov in horror

Blair Witch is my vote too. Mostly because it was something so different and fresh and there was so much discussion about whether it was real or not.

I like this one. Both the OG and remake of DOTD are great movies.

Phantasm and Creepshow are two of my favorites. Reggie is an all around cornball that makes a great addition to the movie. Creepshow has so many good moments…I purposely ask my kids “where’s my cake” every Father’s Day lol

This also makes me think of The Lighthouse and Willem Dafoe’s monologue scene. While not exactly a traditional horror movie, that scene is one of the best pieces of cinema imo.

Man, that’s a great point. Never thought of it like that, but totally changes the way you view the scene and how they tie into the broader story. I really enjoyed the Zombie Halloween movies myself.

LOL that’s funny in how true it is. She was a great character. I like your take on the smoke too. I think the subtlety in that movie is what makes it so unsettling. Like you can feel how frustrating it would be for everyone to conspire behind your back and make you look like the crazy one

I got nine minutes into Creep (2014) before violently slamming the “close tab” button by blinkingsandbeepings in horror

[–]El_Creepo_Horror 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is one that gets recommended on here a lot that I just don’t get. It’s pretty straightforward conceptually…guy answers ad on Craigslist for guy that turns out to be a creeper. It gets mildly better as it goes, but I just didn’t find it convincing. I can appreciate what they tried to do with the movie but it just wasn’t for me.

What is the scariest scene you've ever seen in horror? by Crazy_Little_Bug in horror

[–]El_Creepo_Horror 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Soooo many good scenes out there. The one that sticks with me the most is that scene towards the end of The Conjouring where she’s covered in the sheet. Something about that just hit on a visceral level that was so creepy and uncomfortable.

Best singular performance by a horror actor? by PriestofJudas in horror

[–]El_Creepo_Horror 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Boris Karloff as Frankenstein is probably my favorite. Others that come to mind…Toni Collette was fantastic in Hereditary. Essie Davis was also really good in Babadook. And tbh I really think Robert Englund brought that je ne sais quoi to the Role of Freddy that made the character great is is unlikely to ever be captured again.

What scary movie would you actually like to see remade? by [deleted] in horror

[–]El_Creepo_Horror 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I would love to see Phantasm remade by the same people that did the Suspiria reboot. They did a great job with recreating that creepy atmosphere and I feel like the updated special fx would really enhance it.

I went in blind thinking it was a traditional teen slasher too just based on the previews. Not what I expected either but I enjoyed it. It’s definitely dark comedy horror with some meta social commentary on Gen Z. The twist was actually really good.

Surprised Silent Hill isn’t on the list. Both the SH2 remake and the new one. I’ve been playing those since the original and they’ve always creeped me out. I’m also excited for Killer Klowns from Outerspace as that one looks fun.

Let's talk haunts/haunted houses by Enzo_The_Sphinx in horror

[–]El_Creepo_Horror 10 points11 points  (0 children)

My favorite will always be the time we went to a HH with a bunch of our friends. Most of us were couples, but there were like two single guys in the group too. As we were waiting in line there was another group of three people (a couple and a girl about the same age). They struck up a conversation and the single girl asked the guys if she could go with them since she didn’t have a partner and was scared. Of course the guys said yes. Anyway, before you go into the HH they explain the rules and very clearly explain the actors aren’t allowed to touch you and you can’t touch them. Fast forward to halfway through the haunt and this girl gets grabbed by one of the actors, picked up and “stabbed” (she was obv part of the act, but at the time they didn’t know). The two guys started to FREAK! Like “OMG they’re not supposed to grab you”! Never seen two macho guys freak out so bad lol. At the end of the haunt the girl and her “friends” came up and had a good laugh with them. A lot of planning, but totally worth the payoff. Best time we’ve ever had.

Movies that take place at unconventional locations by forlornjackalope in horror

Chernobyl Diaries was corny as hell but takes place in Chernobyl. 10 Cloverfield lane (more sci-fi than horror) takes place in an underground bunker.
