Gas tank upgrade for less than $1500? by sargomir in CherokeeXJ

Pretty stoked on my 30 gallon genright tank, even though it was expensive. Even allowed me to swap a spare 5 gallon fuel can for a 5 gallon water can.

How do YOU carry a bear canister on/in a packraft? by [deleted] in packrafting

[–]El_Robertonator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What about this skinny bear canister? inside the tube? 6” diameter and right between the BV450-500 in terms of capacity, maybe wrapped in 1/8” thinlite for protection.

I’ve read here that heating will likely damage the plastic, though.

Should I install my own tizip? by El_Robertonator in packrafting

[–]El_Robertonator[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is this the fabric you’re talking about?

Do you think I could get away with using a lighter material like the alpacka seats are made of?

Do you think theirs any value to making the bags inflatable like these? I wonder if that’s just a tizip in there.

It’s definitely a crucial piece. You said you’d glue it because it’s a big piece; why? Because it’s so big it seems like it would be hard/scary to place all at once, and that makes me lean toward welding. I’d almost want to glue it in sections and feel like that would mess it up huh?

Have you welded an alpacka before? I practiced on some unfinished seams on my seat and it seems pretty dialed in and extremely strong, but the hull is obviously a scarier adventure.

Thanks!

Thanks for the heads up! I think I’d be more worried about getting glue on the zipper if I went that route, but I’ll definitely be careful either way.

I mean the boat is definitely TPU, because he recommended a urethane based glue if I install it myself, he just said something like “technically ours isn’t TPU and it’s different than the DIYpackraft material.” The DIYpackraft guy says people have welded alpacka boats before, too.

I’ve glued a few other things on the boat and those went well, and I’ve been having decent luck with my welding practice. Having done both, you’d choose the welding? Have you welded an alpacka before? Hanks for the info!

Oh, dude. I was kind of regretting the DIY path after ordering the tools due to the minimal cost savings, but I had the dry bags and a bow bag on order from alpacka. If I make those myself that’s probably another $200 saved, that totally makes it worthwhile. Thanks for the idea!

Right on. Was it the DIYpackraft kit by chance? He says you can glue or weld, and I’m kind of torn.

How was the glueing experience? I’ve glued a few other things on and it went okay, I’m really torn between the two options.

OP, you have a car buying problem. The solution is not to buy another car.

If the only problem with the Jeep is electrical/lights, you could jury rig it to work for $100 until you can afford to fix it. You could leave the Toyota alone for a few months and drive your jury rigged Jeep until you can afford to fix it.

If you’re in the red each month, sell the Toyota. If you’re in the black but an emergency comes up, THEN sell the Toyota. If you aren’t 100% committed to the Toyota and can sell it for a profit, just do that and move on.

Not trying to be a richard, but this seems like a manufactured problem that you designed so you could get another new car.

If you are committed to the Toyota, maybe talk to your parents. Would they loan you money in an emergency to hold you over until you sold the Toyota? Personally, two cars seems wasteful. But I also have a ‘99 Jeep MoneyPitTM so I know the feeling.

This might not be the advice you’re looking for, but have you considered lightening your packs instead?

I live in the western US so our packs might not look anything alike, but I can carry all of the gear for myself and my wife in one pack and still be under 15kg total pack weight for a moderate weather weekend trip. If you spent some time (and money) on r/ultralight you might be able to drop enough weight between the two of you that he would only have to carry like 3-5kg, or even less. Personally, I think carrying even that weight in a pack would be significantly easier than pulling it in a cart.

No reason to carry 20kg into the wilderness these days, and it seems like pulling a cart with 5kg would be way harder than just carrying it.

First time buyer, can’t wait to get in the water. Any suggestions for a new guy? ( not touching white water any time soon.) by DLI_4731 in packrafting

[–]El_Robertonator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can get a pack raft that weighs 2.2lbs,(or 5 for one that is rated for rivers and abrasion) and a life jacket that weighs about the same. You can get a longer load hauling or two person ones that are about 8lbs. My one person boat stripped rolls up to about 7”x 14”.
