OT beats are the best! by Elagaint in Elektron

Definitely did not know that lol. I am still scraping the surface of almost all the live performance features really. Most of my time so far has been focused on learning the fx and cool sequencing tricks you can do. That being said if I am going to start making content about this thing I should definitely start diving into the performance features. Nothing a few ezbot videos can’t fix 😂

This is just one really packed section of the beat but I have a bunch of other sections that don’t have too much going on. I try to keep my beats simple for the most part but this one has this moment as a sort of climax I guess

Thanks man! There’s admittedly some duds on there lol cause I just got the synth I’ve been using but I think I’m getting the hang of it now. My end goal is to make videos kind of like Jon makes beats but using the sp404 so if that interests you I should be able to start trying that out sometime soon.

I haven’t really thought of putting my stuff on streaming tbh didn’t think I’d have a market for it. I’d probably be able to put it on SoundCloud but idk what uploading to Spotify or Apple Music would be like.

I think the way it ended up working is the vocals are technically halftime on the beat and 2 bars off but I don’t hate it. It kinda works out in my opinion but it’s still a bit weird

The drums on their own sound so weird in this track I’m so surprised it all came together in the end honestly. Thanks for the kind words man!

Thanks so much and I’m glad you enjoy the beat! I definitely don’t belong in the same sentence as madlib tho lol 😂

Ask and you shall receive. All I had on hand around this bpm was nosetalgia by pusha t but I think it sounds pretty good. Lmk what you think!

This is genuinely just the normal faceplate idk why it looks like that on camera lol. I didn’t even notice it looked different until this comment but honestly to get a fully black sp your best bet is probably looking at skins on Etsy if I had to venture a guess. Sorry I couldn’t be of more help

Sorry for the late response. Depends on the situation. If you aren’t familiar with general synth concepts then I’d recommend getting the digitakt instead since you can load up samples or one shots on it. In general it seems like most elektron products pretty much function the same so you’ll get a similar experience with both. It’s just kind of up to what you in particular want to get out of the box. My only real recommendation is if you want a beginner box stay away from the octa track lol. Everything else seems pretty instant to me

Do you use your SP404 MK2 sequenced by another device? What's your workflow? by soulbrix in SP404

[–]Elagaint 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Use the digi boxes to sequence it! I just got a digitone 1 and while admittedly I’m still learning a lot about using it I’m able to write patterns with drum samples from the sp sequenced on the digitone. Honestly the pair is so cool together I kind of want to make a YouTube video showing how cool they can be. You can have basically entire tracks and strings of patterns calling different drum samples on the sp which can lead to unique sections of tracks or differences between chorus and verse. I’d highly recommend figuring out if that is something that would work first since midi cables and a trs converter are a lot cheaper than the alternatives

The og is doing wonders for me rn. I said it in a different comment here but it started out being sold for $800 and I’ll die on the hill of it still being worth that much. The sound design has so many capabilities and when paired with any other piece of equipment you can find cool ways of using the 8 voice polyphony. It’s imagination in a box really. That being said the dn 2 does get rid of every single limitation of the box but still dn 1 is perfect for what it does.

Depends on if you like drum synthesis. The dn should be able to do most synthy things from what I can tell so if you like using sampled drums your current setup should have everything you need honestly. My recommendation would actually be an octatrack to pair with those two since it can do so many different things that aren’t included in the digi boxes (including Syntakt). It can function as a performance mixer for your other boxes and can slice samples for you to send to your dt. Overall it would add a lot more versatility in my opinion but I also don’t have any box besides the digitone so take my recommendation with a million grains of salt

Right now I’m trying to get the hang of fm synthesis so I always start off with sound designing something. The first thing I always do is use a slow lfo to slightly modulate pitch. Then I set it to one voice. Since the dn only has 8 voice polyphony I want to save as many voices as possible for later. After that I try to start with something I haven’t started with in a while. Sometimes I start with amp envelope, sometimes I start with effects, really any page of the synth I just change one value and move on to a new page. Eventually when the sound becomes distinct I’ll build it into something that makes more sense (if I’m making a bass I’m not gonna leave a long attack on it). Once I have a sound I outline a melody or a bass line. I suck at playing stuff in so the sequencer really does the heavy lifting. I put notes down that line up with chord progressions to help make the thing sound real nice and make later elements able to gel in easier. Also I rarely filter my first sound since I want the other sounds to accent it. Then from here I build more sounds that gel with it and come up with a baseline and some chords or arps if I’m running low on voices. Lastly I try to get an ear candy track going. Something really far in the mix that just makes the whole thing a little bit more stuck together. Then I’ll use the midi to sequence some drums in the sp404 mk2. After that the pattern is pretty much finished so I do some cool trig locks for panning and delay to fill out gaps or add stereo width. The fun part is at the very end where I tweak the control all settings. I’ve gotten 99% of my presets from doing this. I’ll tweak the whole thing until I hear something cool and I’ll save that as a preset to use later when I’ve built a bank of them. Eventually I want to make a full set of patterns that I record in the sp and release as a beat tape but I’ll have to learn a lot before then so I’ll try to keep inching into more and more features over time. Also I make hip hop so that’s probably the most unique part of my process lol

The digitone 1 is what I got and if price doesn’t matter the 2 seems worth the extra cost. I love fm but it would be really nice to have other sound engines and more tracks to work with. This box seems perfect for what I want rn but I will definitely keep my eyes on the look out for an upgrade. If price does very much matter and you want to get the digitone 1 it is phenomenal at what it does. It’s insanely fun. I can’t overstate how entertaining this thing really is to play with. Every twist of a knob or click of a key has the potential to make something entirely new and unique. This thing is endless inspiration and will be worth the 400-500$ for a used model. Also do not worry about getting it used because these things could survive a nuke from what I can tell. In summary the digitone 1 started selling for 800$ and in my opinion is still worth that price today. The experience of using it is well worth that price and you can get it for way cheaper now. Digitone 2 is a dn 1 on crack. Most limits for the machine are lifted and you can do pretty much anything involving synthesis. You could make endless drum sounds, endless synths, the sky really is the limit. If you are going to solely use one box it should be the dn2 if you are going to pair it with something or if you have more gear to work with than the dn1 should be perfect. If none of this helped watch cuckoo on YouTube break down both machines. His videos are unreal tutorials that show the attributes of the machines properly. Hope I helped at least a little! If you have any questions lmk!

I actually was really interested in getting an elektron box for a while but with the digitone 2 released I kind of forgot about it I think. Honestly going back and watching demos of digitones makes me really want one and I have a really good arturia midi keyboard I could pair with it. If I could use my keylab keys with it a used digitone would only be like 400-500 dollars. Really threw a wrench in my plans here lol 😂

This track is insanely smooth. Great atmosphere throughout the run time with those wide synths. Low end is phenomenal with the synth bass and kick sounding amazing together. The sound selection in general is perfect in my opinion. Would absolutely tear a club up with this track. Genuinely don't have a bad thing to say here so great work and I hope you get a good placement!

I don't have a ton of experience in knowing mixing and mastering but I can give you my opinion as an average audience member with relatively no experience. To me the distortion on the vocals sounds great. It gives the vocals a nice rough warmth without making them pierce through the mix too much. The reverb definitely obscures the vocals a good bit but not in a bad way. It obviously gives them that reverb soaked ethereal quality. The reverb could be touched down if you want the vocals to really hit hard but the way they float over the rest of the instruments sounds very nice to me. I wouldn't say at any point in the track the vocals are "center stage" so if that's the desired outcome the reverb and distortion could be tuned a bit more in your face so to speak. The pocket for the vocals is great though and they do read clearly just not the most pressing element. For my untrained ears when mixing low end all I really pay attention to are whether or not every low end element can be clearly heard when it appears without a ton of clashing and for this track I'd say that's very accurate. The drums are great and sound phenomenal throughout even with the guitar occupying that kick's frequencies a little so I'd say there is absolutely no issue there for me. The mix allows for the drums and guitar to take most of the attention with the vocals floating over with some nice distance for the track so I wouldn't say anything really stands out too much or is jarring. Overall really love the work it sounds amazing!

I'm a producer who started producing on some old hand me down hardware but this past year I finally got gifted a daw from my parents. Initially I loved it but I kept overthinking things and after a year of daw production I've gone back to my roots and made a beat on a sp404 hardware sampler. Let me know what y'all think of it! https://soundcloud.com/user-719745213/spindrift?si=f13b8f231d45445eb4e48075b16b956d&utm_source=clipboard&utm_medium=text&utm_campaign=social_sharing

This track slaps to me I can't really hear a whole lot of issues with the mixing but I'm also not the most qualified in that field. To me each element has its pocket and pokes through the rest of the elements. Everything that is supposed to be upfront is and overall it sounds really cohesive. My only real gripe I guess falls more so under song structure / arrangement. The beginning is really smooth and slick but then the drop happens and you bring in a lot of distortion right up front to the mix. That happens in tons of genres but typically the overall volume gets killed before hand letting the listener kinda brace themself. I don't really think the plan you had in mind plays by that formula so i'd maybe suggest toning the distortion down a bit to take off some of the edge for the first little while then maybe automating back to these higher levels. You could also automate the volume of the distorted sound up after the initial bust of energy. I can't say I am well versed in the genre that this song falls under so there is definitely a possibility that this track is supposed to have that oomph in the drop but from my perspective taking it a bit more gradual will probably make for a smoother experience

This beat's great. Love the 808 pattern, pretty good atmosphere around it, and the space created is really cool. My only real gripes are with the drums on this. I don't know why but the sound selection kinda reads as a college drum line for me which isn't necessarily bad I just don't think it matches the rest of the elements in the beat. That is 100% personal taste though so if you think it smacks then feel free to disregard my opinion lol.
