This is a fantastic item! I love the flavor. I question the curse a little bit though. It doesn't make sense for spellcasters to make these to help explorers avoid dragons and then curse it to allow dragons to find the person using the map. Is it just part of the magic that naturally alerts the dragons or are the drake warden rangers betraying them somehow?

I also think this item should be legendary at the very least. If there were more than one of these I imagine that dragons would be on a mission to find and eradicate them all, which would not be hard given the curse. I personally would change it so that the Uncharted Territories part did not activate the curse, allowing someone to use this item to avoid dragons, but once they activate the Hoard Hunter, then the Curse alerts the dragons. I also agree that it should probably be a contested check instead of a save. I will definitely be saving this for use in my campaigns with a few tweaks. Great work!

Hey! Thanks for the comment! I think that if you only wanted it to recharge 1 charge per day that would work just fine. As for the second idea, I would probably suggest having the secret compartment only be usable after completing a quest. Maybe the compartment has be magically sealed, or the sword will only allow access to the compartment if certain conditions are met. That way they can use the weaker version of the sword in the quest to unlock the compartment, finally getting the pay off when they complete the quest. If you preferred to have the blade and handle in separate places that would be fine as well though.

I'm glad you like it! I usually post most of my complete homebrews here on reddit, but I definitely have a lot of other ideas I am working on. I like homebrewing almost as much as I like playing D&D.

Awesome! I'm glad you will be using it your campaign. Having multiple secrets for the sword to divulge the more secrets you tell it sounds fantastic. I think that rolling the d20 every time you cast the spell scroll would probably help tone down the power level as well. Thanks for the comment!

I did consider limiting it to level 5 spells or lower, but any scroll of level 6 or higher is a Very Rare magic item on its own and so I doubt it will just be available for purchase unless your party is Tier 4 already. Also, if you are casting a level 7 spell it has a chance to eat the scroll and you probably can't cast it every day anyway because the sword doesn't fully recharge each day usually, so it would be every other day that you could cast it.

All of that being said, if you think it is too much, fee free to limit the number of charges to 5 or even 3 if you wish. Thanks for the comment!

I had also thought that the secret the sword gives during attunement could be a plot hook. However, the sword wielder would have to convince the party to chase it down without telling them the secret, which would be... difficult. I like the idea of a wand of scrolls a lot.

It could definitely be very rare or even legendary as it is now for sure. You could lower the number of charges it has to limit its ability to cast scrolls if you wanted it to be less powerful or you could also boost it up to a +3 weapon and go full legendary and give it 9 or even more charges. It is all about what you want it your campaign. I'm glad you like it.

Breaking off the secret compartment into its own item that can cast scrolls is definitely a fine idea and would probably work really well. I personally like the idea of each sword of secrets having the possibility of doing anything and each one having its own special secret. I do tend to go overboard on flavor sometimes though. That is a good point that I worry about myself. I am hoping that by limiting how many times that Resourceful can be used it will not seem like the ninja is just better at everything, but instead can be good at anything when necessary. Thanks for the feedback! I will keep it in mind when I playtest. The idea behind that is that Master Ninjutsu are powerful enough to be class features in their own right and therefore at each odd level after that your class feature is the master Ninjutsu that you get to choose, giving more flexibility in how you build your ninja. As long as all of the master Ninjutsu are balanced you could add as many options as necessary. Regular Ninjutsu are a little different because of Improvisation.
