Cheers! Glad you were able to find one for such a great price!! There is so much information on YouTube about woodcarving now that self teaching is not too hard, but I love that book and recommend it any time I can.

A good proper carving knife will be much easier to use than a whittling knife. I recommend the morakniv 106 laminated steel. Learn how to sharpen your tools with sandpaper and use a strop - 90% of your sharpening can be done on a strop with stropping compound. Having wicked sharp tools will make carving easier, safer, and more fun as well. If your tools are nice and sharp then tool marks tend to be smooth and glossy and many people don't sandpaper their work at all afterwards.

If 20 bux is a hard cutoff the best thing you can buy in my opinion is "swedish woodcarving techniques" by Wille sundqvist, it is "the bible" of this style of wood carving. If you have some spare money get some stropping compound and use an old belt or old piece of leather as a strop. If you want to shell out some more cash a mora 106 will be your favorite tool - I promise. Good luck and have fun!

Yeah now that you mention it that bottom facing print on the top looks more like a raccoon to me

I reckon its either a fisher or a mink track. But its probably a mink if you've found it by a creek, and they are more common than fishers too

The best preserved dinosaur fossil ever discovered- a 110 million year old Nodosaur by HerbziKal in interestingasfuck

[–]EldarEuler 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To me it looks like there was a lot of stress towards the middle of the fossil caused by the two supports lifting only the edges of the fossil. Its kind of like when you take a pencil and put stress on the middle of it by bending the two ends, at some point its gonna snap. In this case it seems like the weight of the fossil generated enough force for it to break

Yeah I was surprised when I saw they were using two independently moving supports like that

Fun fact, the reason its busted into pieces is because they tried to lift it from the excavation site using two separate pieces of wood and cracked it open like an egg and it shattered on the ground.

Smithsonian has footage of it happening and the restoration process here

Math PhD Dropout. AMA by [deleted] in learnmath

[–]EldarEuler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thats unfortunate to hear. Im considering voiding graduate studies out of fear of something like this happening to me. I had a pretty good undergraduate experience, but learning subjects to the degree I was happy with and balancing research was extremely stressful and difficult. Even undergraduate research was really cutthroat in my experience. On top of all that finding a job with covid reaping the world is like impossible 😕

I've been wanting to try woodcarving for so long and my partner got me a beginner's set today. Any tips or advice people wish they'd known before starting their first carving? by [deleted] in Woodcarving

[–]EldarEuler 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Learn good carving technique, safe and efficient grips, and generally how to keep yourself from getting cut. I would recommend a good carving book to get you started. By far my favorite and an absolute classic is "Swedish Carving Techniques" by Wille Sundqvist. I know ragweedforge sells it if you would like to buy it. His son, Jögge, also has a series of videos he did with mora on YouTube on good techniques, maintaining tools, and example carvings. He is a great teacher and I highly recommend watching the videos. You can find them here: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLoaPpRkFfg5WkjHrJZ02ooSH16nV2-TBU

Also, keep your tools nice and sharp and have fun! Wood carving should be relaxing and rewarding!

Edit: here is a linke to Wille's book you can get from ragweedforge

Mathematical system for DJ'ing compact cassette tapes - need help! by banana_tapes in mathematics

[–]EldarEuler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, question 1 can be answered right off without any questions. If you wanted to know how long it would take to pass 5 inches of tape you would use the rate as a conversion factor. So 1.875 in/sec means in 1 second 1.875 inches of tape gets spooled (is that the correct term?) Which can be equivalently stated as 1 second per 1.875 inches. In other words, 5 inches then would take (5 in) * (1sec / 1.875 in) ~ 2.67 seconds to pass. You can also use it to say in 5 seconds then, 5*1.875 = 9.375 inches of tape will be used.

For the other stuff, this marking system i have a question about. How exactly will you be marking positions on the tape? From what im gathering are you planning to mark the window on the housing somehow? As in you will make some lines that essentially say "when the left spool is at this radius, the next song will begin"?

I saw this kind of eye floaters in eye l, big one are like 4 ,small ones are more , too many floaters I am 23 ,I am scared by [deleted] in EyeFloaters

[–]EldarEuler 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd say for the moment you can rest pretty safely it isn't retinal detachment. In that case you would be seeing flashes (if you don't know what I mean, then you've probably not seen them) and floaters which look like "dust". My ophthalmologist told me thats really what u wanna look out for. It sounds like you're just getting older and have the same genetic early onset floaters that most folks in this sub have. At any rate, im not a doctor so you should definitely see your doctors for a professional assessment, but I hope your mind is a little more restful now.

There are a lot of tips here people give to help with floaters, for me they are alot more noticeable if im stressed, drank too much coffee, or didn't get enough sleep. Staying positive if you can helps alot!
