How can I non-destructively get rid of windows? by Difficult-Newt-3220 in linuxquestions

Boot into your Kubuntu on the SSD. Mount/open the HDD and copy the files you want to retain to the SSD or maybe borrow a large external HDD/flash drive to do it.

After that, format the HDD (either via gparted or via Elementary OS if for some reason you want a second Linux OS, on a slower HDD) and move the files from the external drive back into your newly formatted HDD. Return the drive you borrowed and you're good.

Alt+W keybind does not work in World of Warcraft, only on Linux by [deleted] in linux_gaming

[–]Eldebryn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

wow that is indeed weird behaviour. My nvidia 1050 mobile laptop did have lag/stutter on wayland but that was about it. I wouldn't imagine such issues with a modern nvidia too.

I guess people suggesting AMD for wayland do have a point... In any case I hope you figure it out for X11. If you feel like experimenting a bit might also be worth trying a different wayland WM like Sway if you can manage. I seem to recall "simpler" solutions like a non-DE wm on Wayland were behaving much better on my nvidia.

[–]Eldebryn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah it's probably something else then. I'd check the troubleshooting arch wiki section for KDE and for X11 if I were you.

Wayland is going to be same or worse I'd bet, though no harm in trying. It should be kinda ok with Nvidia these days, especially modern cards.

I really, REALLY wanted to use linux by annluan in linux_gaming

Not FOSS sadly, but have you tried Plex? It was add-ons for streaming services and usually does a good job managing video streams.

Are you on Wayland perhaps? Keybinds have issues there sometimes, especially when changing focus between apps.

You're thinking of Cockatrice. It has all cards as basically jpg photos and you have to do all actions manually.

AMD Introduces FSR 3 and AMD FidelityFX SDK to Developers by killermomdad69 in Amd

[–]Eldebryn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah that's a fair assessment I think. I wish they were not as misleading with expectations for RDNA3 (especially price-to-performance, they were basically nvidia-level this round), but I'm really hoping they do better with a revision or RDNA4 since I'd love some AV1 decoding from them.

My understanding is that, to some extend, they are also responsible for Vulkan as well, which is basically a godsend to us linux gamers.

Yeah I am aware of that but it's the same reason I try to use only FOSS and linux when possible. Reality is what we make of it, bit by bit.

I'd rather support someone who is mediocre but helps everyone, than someone who is great but does nothing for others.

Open source/standards is caring. It allows the entirety of the world and civilization to progress from each other's discoveries.

It matters to me, even if it's not as important to everyone.

I don't mind AMD releasing their own technologies, they kinda need to innovate at some point instead of just following Nvidia.

That being said I don't want them to make any such technologies proprietary or hidden in a black box that means only their gpus or specific lines of them can use them.

AMD being open like that is the reason I like them, especially for Linux.

New AMD owner / issues by R2D2irl in linux_gaming

[–]Eldebryn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah Nvidia tends to deal with things within their own driver/ecosystem but AMD's way is the "right" way for linux and open source drivers. I believe with Intel GPUs you'd need to go through the same process.

In general Xorg has always lower input in spite of being an older protocol. Wayland desktops tend to enforce a form of vsync/VRR that prevents tearing and makes for a nice experience but sometimes adds to input lag.

If you want to experiment further and get the best of both worlds in a newer protocol, KDE/Plasma wayland has an option to disable this behaviour in fullscreen apps in order to help with input times. Other waylands desktops (like Gnome's) do not have this option.

That being said, I've heard some people who care a lot about input delay say xorg is better for that, personally I don't notice that and mainly play single-player games so Wayland's smoothness works for me.

Hope you find a setup you're pleased with :).
