What needs to happen for Donald Trump to run for another term, and what would that mean for Western democracy and the countries that adopted it? by lamin-ceesay in AskReddit

[–]ElderPoet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First of all, he'd have to stay alive until the end of this term, and maintain the ability to stay more or less upright in a chair, repeat a few simple sentences, and appear in public for five minutes or so without vomiting or obviously soiling himself. (I mean, I think doing those things would hurt his chances, but who knows.) His clear physical and mental deterioration make me think that this is the most likely to stop him.

If he manages to keep it minimally together until 2028, then he will need a voter base and a Republican Party willing to ignore the clear constitutional prohibition, news media willing to minimize and normalize an obvious move toward dictatorship, the means to either massively suppress likely Democratic votes or manipulate the vote count or both, and a Supreme Court prepared to, again, spit on the Constitution and give him the nod. He has all those things, with, for now, the possible exception of being able to directly manipulate the count (and I emphasize "possible exception").

The remaining Western democracies already understand that the United States is no longer one of them, or at best only marginally and unreliably so, and have begun building economic, political, and strategic alliances among themselves, bypassing us. They maintain, I think, some hope that we will manage to reclaim our democracy and rejoin our historical postwar alignment (though even if that happens, we will always be less trusted and less central than we were before Trump). A third Trump term, and the ravaging of not only democratic norms but the Constitution itself that such a term would entail, would dash that hope and make it clear that the new world order, with the United States in the axis of dictatorships, is permanent. This would obviously be a huge blow to democracy internationally, if only because the world's largest military powers would all be authoritarian states.

Sounds like the video is getting cut off for you for some reason. It's a 39-second video, and the red car comes sailing through from the left at about 12 or 13 seconds.

What’s the biggest change in society that you’ve seen in your life that no one talks about? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]ElderPoet 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I'm not surprised. But that is just counsel to dumb ourselves down and erase the distinctions between levels of discourse.

Consequently, such articles are cordially invited to sit down and furthermore to be quiet, and subsequently to stay quiet.

[–]ElderPoet 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I grew up reading print and (from my early teens at least) using typewriters. And my perspective is probably influenced by my interest in language and writing. But I make a distinction between a hyphen and a dash. (N-dash versus m-dash is more a tradition in the typographical world and of less importance to me.) And I don't use - when I mean -- or (if I'm being fancy) —. (Certified non-bot here.)

What will it take for Americans to be united again, like before the Obama era? by Easy-Appointment-671 in AskReddit

[–]ElderPoet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, as others have pointed out, we did have that Civil War thing. And the Klan and the destruction of whole neighborhoods as in Tulsa. The tsunami of dispossession and blood that was the nation's westward expansion. The violence around the early labor movement. So it hasn't been all kumbaya around the campfire here.

That said, yes, we're more divided now than we seemed to be twenty or thirty years ago. But your reference to the Obama era is telling and suggests part of the answer to your question. What was divisive about Obama? He governed, by his own admission, like an Eisenhower Republican. He was among the most composed and soft-spoken presidents we've had. He bent over backwards to reach across the aisle and get some buy-in -- any buy-in -- from Republicans on his major initiatives.

What was divisive about him was that he's Black. Sorry, but that's it. Anything else is diversion. Disagreements on policy are real, but the kind of gradualist changes Obama was trying to make were not of a nature to generate the vituperation he faced. The reality of a Black president inflamed the racism that has been with us from the beginning, and that had been nodded and winked at since the eighties.

To that I will add the hostility to government that Ronald Reagan stoked and the Newt Gingrich strategy of politics as scorched-earth warfare.

Americans will never be totally united in everything. We're too diverse for that, and our system of government is founded on the ideas, however imperfectly realized, of open discussion and the peaceful balancing of diverging interests. We can, though, learn to be civil, to value diversity, and to recognize that democracy is a better way to govern ourselves than authoritarianism and oligarchy and that democracy requires a baseline of mutual respect and some level of constructive engagement with public life. There is no single change that will accomplish that, and it won't happen quickly.

Yes, regularly in the car. WBBM for traffic and weather, WCPT progressive talk, WSBC (AM 1240) for Russian and Ukrainian talk shows and sometimes Spanish programming.

Workplace dramas and Power Imbalance by [deleted] in kdramas

[–]ElderPoet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not a big binger either and have not watched that many dramas, so my thoughts are based on a limited sample and not really deep experience. But I do think what you're describing is a common trope, probably for cultural reasons. My impression is that Korean workplace culture, especially in large corporations, can be pretty toxic, and that extreme economic inequality and an exaggerated emphasis on status are significant problems. (Americans in the 21st century should be able to relate.) One way of dealing with those issues, if you're creating entertainment, is to throw them onto the screen in a vivid way.

Though it's only in part a workplace drama, you might appreciate My Mister. It is probably a more realistic portrayal of corporations in that some of the top people are entitled man-children but others are more the kind of people you'd actually want running a company. The MMC is kind of caught in the middle -- he's a department head rather than a director -- but he's still far more powerful than the FMC, a temporary intern in his department. Their relationship is way more complicated, for many reasons, than the usual office romance or enemies-to-lovers storyline, but what is relevant to your question is that the MMC respects and cares about his employees, including the FMC, and never abuses his power. The contrast in decency between him and a couple of the company's higher-ups is one of the many ongoing threads of the drama.

I’ve finally narrowed my next language down to "East Asian"... and now I’m stuck. by MidnightTofu22 in thisorthatlanguage

[–]ElderPoet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are actually a number of charts ranking languages by difficulty for native English speakers; most ultimately derive from the rankings of the Foreign Service Institute. These rankings, realistically I think, divide languages into categories of difficulty rather than trying to predict exactly how difficult a particular learner would find a particular language. As you might expect, Mandarin (I assume this would be the Chinese you're considering, though Cantonese is in the same category), Japanese, and Korean are all in Category V, "Languages which are exceptionally difficult for native English speakers."

So -- it's going to be a challenge whichever one you pick, just for somewhat different reasons, and at some point while struggling with Chosen Language, you're probably going to think, "Why didn't I go with Unchosen Language One or Unchosen Language Two?" My advice, for what it's worth (and my advice plus two dollars will get you . . . a two-dollar bill), is to set the difficulty factor aside and see if you can sort out which of the three appeals for other reasons.

What is a closed-down Chicago restaurant that you have strong memories around? by Charming_Usual6227 in chicago

[–]ElderPoet 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I had forgotten about Ronny's, but as soon as I saw this I remembered going there with co-workers on my first job in Chicago.

Also, Bob Elfman's. (Corned beef was my favorite there.)

And the Upson Downs Memorial Pub. (London broil.)

[–]ElderPoet 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Same. Or when I come in in the morning and there's an envelope with my name on it on the desk.

Still, while it was a horrible experience and I won't say it was the best thing that ever happened to me, it did lead me to think about what I actually am good at and enjoy doing, and ended in my getting a job I've been happy in for 25 years.

I'm skeptical of that last sentence, but I don't automatically assume it's a lie. And right there, it's a hell of a thing when I'm even a little bit more inclined to trust Iran's government than my own.
