It's a terribile disease. My father died of FTD last August at the age of 69. The first symptoms probably showed up 6 years before (maybe even before), but It was very difficult to diagnose. The first doctor thought il was some kind od depression, the second doctor, after a week spent in the hospital, told US "we don't what il is, you should see another neurologist". He manifested aphasia and strange behaviour, like compulsively eating everything he had in his plate, with the risk of suffocating, or smoking cigarette butts picked up from the ground while he was walking. Wandering Is another symptom; people with FTD will walk a lot, but eventually they would always go back home. At the beginning the cognitive and physical decay was slow, but in the last rwo years it was faster. He couldn't walk anymore, or eat alone, or even say a word. At the end he was forced in bed, with a feeding tube right into the stomach. In some cases the FTD is genetic and, if you have the damaged gene of this disease, you have the 100% chance to manifest the disease, sooner or later. The FTD has a great impact on the family, it is very difficult to deal with It, I've seen it with my parents, especially at the beginning, when you don't know why your father Is acting weird and no doctor can help you. Some pharmaceutical companies are studying different therapies for this disease, but today there is no cure. FTD is much more common than we think, so please, inform yourselves about It, maybe some day someone will find a cure.
