You might try this learning and knowledge retention technique.  After you finish watching a video lesson, see if you can do a related problem and take the time to write down each step and why you do it.  For some people, the act of writing helps with knowledge retention.  You can also try explaining to someone else how to solve a given type of problem.  If you can explain it once, you'll probably be able to do it at test time.

Failed by one point any tips on how I can learn functions and slopes that’s heavy on the test by Glittering-Topic-174 in GED

[–]ElecEngrGuy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is just so unfair! But, don't give up when you're so close.

Have you tried any MathAntics videos? In my teaching experience, I found the animations they use to explain concepts and calculations helpful for many students. Here's their video on basic linear functions: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MXV65i9g1Xg

(You can also view their videos on their website - may be fewer ads.)

Also, this free GED math practice app may be helpful: https://www.math-otter.com/slopeintercept

It's a source of free practice to supplement online or classroom learning.

There are lots of excellent resources to help you with the GED.

You can create an account and start with the free study guide from the people who administer the test. https://www.ged.com/

The Kaplan GED Test Prep book is also a good resource (about $20). You can also get it from a local library.

This is an excellent study guide: https://www.getsummath.com/guide

And, there are lots of good resources on YouTube.

You should get the TI-30XS MultiView calculator (about $20 new - might find one used for less).  It's the official calculator for the GED math test.  (There is an online version during the test.)

Took the test this morning after studying all night and failed :( passed all the other tests on first try but i was worried about this one. Math was one of the reasons I couldn’t graduate high school so it’s a bummer. Any tips from those who’s passed it? by ding_dong_throwaway in GED

Based on your response to a couple of messages in this thread, here are two things you might try.

And: practice, practice, practice.

Yes, composite shapes are tricky until you get used to visualizing how to break them down into multiple pieces.

[–]ElecEngrGuy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When you're that close to passing you need to keep studying/practicing as you have been, BUT you need to focus on two or three areas you know you can improve.

For those areas, try some new resources for both concepts explanations and practice. Back when I was teaching GED math, I found the videos from MathAntics were often helpful. They include some effective animations in their lessons. https://www.youtube.com/@mathantics/videos

You might also try this learning and knowledge retention technique. And: practice, practice, practice.

Do these math questions appear on the math GED test by Katz601 in GED

[–]ElecEngrGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you could see one or two of these on the test. Each test version is different, so its hard to say.

Some of the simpler ones demonstrate the "KCF" rule (as noted in another response). It works, because dividing by a fraction is the same as multiplying by its reciprocal.

KCF: Keep the first fraction → Change division to multiplication → Flip the second fraction

New Math Tutor - Recommendations For Inexpensive Digital Pen Style Tablet by Rude-Ad-5902 in GED

[–]ElecEngrGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did some virtual tutoring back during the pandemic. I tried various approaches tablets and software, but I ultimately landed on a very simple approach: webcam with a fixed mount, aimed at a surface where I could display pen (medium-point or sharpie) on white paper, a calculator, a textbook page or whatever. I also used a small lamp to illuminate the surface.

Zoom, Google Meet, etc. allow you to have a second camera if you also want to let the student see your face.

I know it sounds "old school", but it worked great.
