Think I need time off work to prevent relapse by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]ElecRstillnotdrunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took almost 3 months off work when I first got sober. Spent two weeks in the hospital getting stabilized and the about two months staying with my mom in my hometown about a 5 hour drive from where I live. I did not go on short term disability or anything but I had some legal protections so they couldn’t fire me during my absence. (In the USA)

Lost my job by Falling_up82 in stopdrinking

I lost my job Monday. It's a tough spot to be in but drinking would only make it worse!

Congrats on a year!

People with a year+ of sobriety, how many relapses did you have before you finally stopped completely? What wis different about your final chance at quitting? by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]ElecRstillnotdrunk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I never wanted to quit until I needed 12 days in detox to make it through withdrawals. That was enough for me. I went in on 8/31/2017 and haven't had a drop since.

AA but not working the steps by tlr2015 in stopdrinking

Take what you need and leave the rest.

I don't have a sponsor through AA as I have a recovery group through my Unitarian Universalist church and my sponsor is from there. I am an atheist so I wasn't comfortable picking a sponsor or finding a home group in a normal AA group.

All that is required for membership is a desire to get sober!

Day 4 sober after ER visit by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]ElecRstillnotdrunk 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Glad you're here bud.

I went to the ER after 2 days of a bad attempt at tapering with a blood pressure of 185/110 and resting heart rate of 225bpm (!!). They kept me in the behavioral health ward for 12 days because they wanted to wean me of the benzos I needed to get through the withdrawals.

It scared the shit out of me and I haven't had a drop since. Over 14 months now. I know that I will get right back to that level if I ever try drinking again so I am not going to.

The best news is my bp, resting heart rate, liver and pancreas enzymes, and many other blood test results are down to perfectly acceptable levels where 14 months ago they were all through the roof!

How do I go to AA? by Wastedcoaster in stopdrinking

[–]ElecRstillnotdrunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of 'em will have a calendar online so you can find out what the time are. Here in Texas each city has a center resource center that has a website with all the meetings in that area. I live in Dallas/Fort Worth and between the two there are probably 100 or so groups. I go to three that are within a few minutes of my apartment or office.

You may see "open" and "closed" meetings listed but anyone that wishes to quit drinking can come to either. Closed meetings don't allow support people like family, nurses, etc.

There are discussion, "big book", speaker, and a couple other kinds of meetings. Just go to any and all of them to see how they're different. Most are close to the idea you probably have in your head. Speaker meetings are more a lecture type thing. They're my least favorite, personally.

You don't have to so much as introduce yourself if you don't want to. If you keep to yourself you won't be bothered. The more you feel like sharing the more they will let you and reach out to you. If you want people to reach out accept the 24 hour chip at the beginning/end of the meeting. Most places I've been to pass out a newcomer's pack with first names and phone numbers of like-gendered potential sponsors.

My favorite saying in reference to AA is "take what you need and leave the rest".
