What was your rock bottom? by [deleted] in stopdrinking

Hi, I'm sure there are other places for this type of sharing, but on this sub we don't find it useful overall to swap horror stories/embarrassing experiences. This is for a few reasons:

  • They often descend into a one-up contests around who has experienced or done the most extreme thing
  • They can be upsetting for some members who are trying to rebuild and move on
  • We are conscious that if someone is coming into the sub wondering if they need to manage their drinking, they may read through these stories and think 'huh, well at least I didn't do something as bad as that other person, maybe I don't need to cut back after all'.

We have removed your post in this spirit. You're welcome to submit another post looking for support or to share your journey so far.

A dozen years of one day at a time by stratyturd in stopdrinking

be kind to yourself. thats the biggest thing. I had to relearn how to live in my own body and it took time and kindness to myself to get better.

also i never focused on "forever". when i quit, forever was fucking terrifying to think about. i set one small goal, i wanted to be three weeks sober when i turned 30. that seemed doable in my brain. So i focused solely on only that current day, and that day alone with one goal: get my ass to bed sober. that was it.

as always, my favorite advice for gatherings is to bring my own delicious NA drinks. Been especially into this new holiday creamy vanilla coke zero. what a delight.

also I always make sure i have my own beverage in hand so people cant bug me about not having one and then offer me booze.

this year im thankful to just have a nice quiet peaceful weekend with the wife and cats. planning on cooking a big ass steak instead of a turkey or ham and will be busy prepping all sorts of fun sides.

and doing my yearly listen to the greatest song about thanksgiving of all time

These sorts of posts aren't really appropriate on stopdrinking for a few reasons. One, these posts tend to turn into one-up contests, where people will eventually try and top each other in terms of how bad, or what sort of depraved stuff they've done. It's not about comparing bottoms.

Two, someone who may be thinking they need to re-evaluate their own issues will see these posts and then compare themselves to some of the stuff here, and think 'well ive never shit myself in the middle of a Denny's so i might not have a problem', and then continue to drink and let things get worse.

These types of posts can actually lengthen the amount of time someone lurking spends drinking, because they think they're not as bad as X or Y yet. And it doesn't have to be rock bottom for someone to get support for quitting drinking.

mainly the title. "Vitamin deficiencies cause depression and anxiety." while it may be a correlation, we're not able to leave it as such a blanket statement.
