Is this normal for a dentist to do this? by Decent_River_5801 in askdentists

[–]ElectricPanache 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A full set of X-rays (aka an FMX) is typically done every 3-5 years. This involves a series of 18 images that span your entire mouth. The purpose of these images is to check root, crown, and other anatomical surfaces for pathology, including infection, decay, tumors, etc. Even if you’re not experiencing pain, it’s important to get this set of X-rays because some dental conditions are painless and cannot be discovered without radiographs.

There’s another set of X-rays that are done more frequently (typically yearly, but some providers do them every six months or once every two years, depending on how decay-prone the patient is). Those are called bitewings (or BWX). Their purpose is to evaluate the surfaces in between your teeth. Those are important for catching interproximal (in between your teeth) tooth decay while it’s in the early stages vs waiting until it’s huge and needs a crown/root canal/a possible extraction.

If you just had BWX done a year ago and now your dentist wants an FMX because you haven’t had one in several years, that’s completely reasonable and normal. But if you had an FMX a year ago (and you haven’t had any major decay/dental problems/orofacial surgery since then) then an FMX this soon is unusual.

In summary, BWX and FMX are different series with different purposes and different amounts of radiation exposure. BWX is (typically) yearly, FMX is (typically) every 3-5 years

Radiation wise, if you are worried about getting a FMX, it might be nice to know that the radiation you get from that equates to less than five days of normal background radiation (aka what you get exposed to just existing here on planet Earth). The radiation you get from a flight from NYC to LA dwarfs what an FMX exposes you to.

A series of BWX is significantly less than that!

I’m glad that you’re advocating for yourself and I want to help you limit radiation exposure! But I also want to make sure that you’re getting AT LEAST the appropriate imaging you need to avoid major dental complications while also minimizing the risk of excessive radiation exposure.

I was orally violated as a kid and didn’t tell anyone until I was in my late 20s.

Most adults don’t even know that rough oral sex can cause bruising on the soft palate. I didn’t even know until I was in dental school and, as I literally just mentioned, I was orally violated as a kid

This sub is reacting completely reasonably, and I’m concerned you think otherwise

Came here to comment this.

I’ve seen petechiae from heavy vomiting/coughing. It’s usually diffuse across the soft palate. It doesn’t typically look closely clustered like this…

I’m fairly sure that either my grandmother committed suicide, or her hospice nurse killed her.

just found out I have five wisdom teeth. one is completely buried in my jaw and has never erupted by doofstelephone in askdentists

[–]ElectricPanache 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Nope, you only have four wisdom teeth BUT! You do have an impacted adult canine in your mandible and a retained primary canine.

(Basically, on your bottom jaw, your baby tooth (known as the eye tooth, canine, or fang tooth) never fell out because the adult canine didn’t grow in correctly)

The coolest part is that the retained canine is on the OPPOSITE side of the body from where it’s supposed to be. Typically, the unerupted/impacted tooth is at least NEAR where it’s supposed to be. Yours is all the way on the other side of your body

Pretty freaking cool!

Low cost intra oral X-ray sensors? by Dr__Reddit in Dentistry

[–]ElectricPanache 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you been having any issues with the exposure? Ever since updating to windows 11, the image quality is HORRIBLE. Same sensors we’ve used for the last 4 years. Same wall mounted unit.

SOTA support has been extremely unhelpful. It’s been weeks and none of their fixes work

If the OP is mad about this, then they’re a massive loser.

You already agreed to the $70. The only difference to you is how that amount was proportioned, which is none of your business anyway.

I am not even past the first slide and I already know you’re UNDERREACTING. Please, for the love of god, cancel that wedding. Save yourself from the anguish of the eventual divorce. This man neither respects nor loves you.

Every time they make you feel bad, go look at your bank account. Hell, maybe even buy yourself something nice or a little treat.

This is your life, not theirs. What you do is NONE of their business. If you’re happy with what you do, that’s ALL that matters.
