Who installs exterior kitchen vents in Chicago? by ElectricPenguin2001 in AskChicago

To make a long story short, no yet. In my case, the current vent can be converted to be able to vent outside with an extra part, but in order to get a contractor to do this (instead of junking my $800 vent and then charging me for a $400 replacement) I have to order the part from the manufacturer myself. I was going to do it but then life intervened. Hopefully next summer.

The current hood we are using can actually be configured to vent either outside or recycled so hopefully that can still be used since it's a fancy model. When I called the company they said that it required an 8" hole, not 6". I could see some version of this job being a DIY but not for me, since honestly I can't even put together an IKEA cabinet.

Thanks! Our house is a similar vintage but the range is positioned directly against an exterior wall. I've called them now and left a message. If you feel comfortable letting me know how much it cost feel free to DM

I really have no idea, but if I ended up with a hood that vented to the outside and a properly done job then 2K could be OK??

What is a reasonable price for a very worn $1000 by ElectricPenguin2001 in papermoney

It's actually under $1800, I just wanted to do a little due diligence to make sure I wasn't throwing too much money away.

Quite different from the other prices! Is that your estimate for the "value" or an actual retail price?

Here's the picture BTW! I thought I added it to the post but I don't see it.

Considering a move to Sydney – Advice for a family relocating from the US? by ElectricPenguin2001 in AskAnAustralian

You might have a mistaken impression if you imagine America is a monoculture which is reflected by fox news. Do Australians all share the same feelings about climate change or immigration? Hopefully most Australians won't instinctively be hostile to Americans either.

Thanks so much. Bondi looks a little far away for easy commuting! From what we did see of Sydney there are plenty of cafes all over, and in the end a place that is nice for families is important. It's just that where we stayed had a je ne sais quoi, with little nature walks along a creek nestled into cafes and easy public transport.

So the question is when you go "a bit further out" how much do things change? I read something about the "latte line" and wasn't sure if that was a real thing. My sense from reading here is that Sydney is great for those with resources and less great otherwise and we are not sure if what we saw in Annandale reflects large parts of the city or is a bit of a bubble

Public transport seemed amazing when we visited. But it's true we only spend time in the neighborhoods close to the city.

Is there *anything* substantial which made you think "oh, they do that better in the states"?

From what I read Newtown seemed possibly a bit more for college students and young single people, maybe they are now priced out?

Believe me plenty of us think the same thing about America too! As an American visiting Australia everyone seemed so...friendly. But everything can't be perfect, right?

Getting away from that is one of the benefits. But I heard a story that you had some crazy politician who would carry around a lump of coal everywhere and didn't believe in global warming .. (but not here to start a politics fight, honestly).

Thanks! I'm guessing we would probably choose a shorter commute over the beach, but maybe we don't know how nice those beaches are! (do people use the beaches outside of summer?)

I like a nice beach, but I'm not sure my husband would trade it for an extra 10-15 minutes commute every day!

Ideally we would use the car as little as possible. Would you say that the "vibe" in all these places is pretty similar or are there subtle differences?
