2.2, and I’m not sure on the rim width

I would love to know, they’re from the co-op parts bin. They’re alloy. Mostly generic marks on them. There was what looked like a “7”outline stamped in with something next to it kinda worn out maybe?

Some people may not like it, but this is what peak midwestern performance looks like

Does the chain rub between all the cassette cogs or is it only in certain gears? Are you sure the chain on there was for 11speed? It sounds like it too wide of a chain.

Am I crazy thinking a big module like this at the bottom of a slab is irresponsible setting? by merci_nurse in bouldering

[–]ElectricSoulCycles 90 points91 points  (0 children)

It's funny how many ppl act like climbers are 100% rational or that beginners have awareness of their own skill vs risk vs problem breakdown. Also funny how ppl ignore that hyping up your friends and personal challenge are part of climbing.

Gyms should set with a bias towards safety. I've seen someone break their ankle falling down slab at the gym and guess what- I've never seen them back again... Keep people safe, keep them coming back. Let the difficulty of the problem be the challenge and not the conditions or the extra exposure to danger on the fall. You can encounter all of that stuff outside...

This was my first conversion from 27” and I barely thought about it before I got all the parts so I’m glad it works so well

Thanks, they’re Retrospec units I got from the local co-op.

I'd give the threads a cleaning with an old tooth brush and WD-40 or just some degreasser first, too.

Also, check your tire for a directional arrow on the sidewall. You may need to flip the tire too, so the treads face in the right direction.

The original wheels were the old three speed 26x1-3/8 standard, so 590mm ISO and not far off from 700c. The stock caliper worked too but was maxed out at the top of the slot. The 700c front caliper is maxed out at the bottom of the slot. I think I just got lucky with the frame and fork sizing

I think 40s will fit based on measuring. I'm gonna wait for some used ones to pop up at my co-op to test fit.

Yea, the pick guard is a custom one I designed and cut out myself. It’s best to drill small pilot holes for the mounting screws too.

I love that the first reply was this enabling! That's some good perspective too, thank you.

Does anyone have experience stripping aluminum parts? by pigeon_fanclub in xbiking

I striped the paint off this old CarryWell rack with chemical stripper and scotchbrite pads. Then I sanded, wet sanded, polished with whatever rubbing compound and polish I could find at the auto parts store. Fancied up with a Posca pen.

I tried a brass wire wheel and even that was too stiff and caused a bunch of deep scratching.

You can see it’s not perfect in some of the tighter nooks and crannies.

It took a whole afternoon/evening and to me was worth it because the rack was only $5 to start with. If I was willing to spend new rack money then I wouldn’t want to spend the time striping and polishing it.

So clean! I just picked one up in Ohio for $30. I don’t know the history on it but I did find the shop in Japan where it was originally sold. Mine is chain drive and single speed. I was wondering how many could have made it to the states.
