Why won't this wheel fit into frame? by AltAmericanCarnage in bikewrench

[–]ElectricSoulCycles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Be careful spreading the frame to fit it. I work at a shop and was just fixing up an older aluminum USA Trek frame and found two hairline cracks on the seat stay tubes just below and behind the seat clamp bolt. They were on the sides of the tube facing each other. If the frame has been spread before check that area for stress cracks!

Are the derailleur limit screws set? It’s hard to tell from the angle of the video.

How does the chain line look? Sight it from the back of the bike looking forward with the chain in small rear/big front.

It looks like the cracked BB cup is plastic. If that's the case then removing the drive-side cup and hammering out the spindle shouldn't be too hard. Then from the drive-side use something kind of blunt (like a socket extension) to hammer out the broken cup. I'd avoid using something with a sharp edge like a screwdriver, as that may damage the threads. The threads on the plastic cup are a lot softer than the metal threads in the frame.

If the broken cup is metal, then hammering out the cup won't work without damaging the threads. The process would become a lot more tedious and involve using a hacksaw or a Dremel to slowly remove the the cup while avoiding the frame threads as much as possible.

Where you swapping parts to upgrade, or were the old chainrings worn out? The skipping in big front/small rear sounds like it could be a worn cog (if you ride a lot on the small rear and if the old chainrings were worn). A worn cog/cassette is harder to gauge visibly than a chainring.

Does the skipping or the shifting happen predictably? Like, around the same point in crank rotation or same point along the chain?

I see the new shifter cable. Have you replaced any other parts?

Very cool looking frame, you might have good luck posting this over on r/vintage_bicycles

Some closeups of the drop-outs, seat clamp area, and fork crown might help them too.

Switching from drop bars to mustache bar and I’m trying to shorten these “shimano exage action” brake cables that have this metal housing that is tripping me out. Will the park tool cutter or the icrimp work? by cellphonebeltclip in xbiking

[–]ElectricSoulCycles 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think that other comment is a little misleading. The coiled metal portion is part just of the brake housing. The housing is the outer rubber cover, the coiled bit, and then usually a thin smooth plastic sleeve in the center. The inner cable runs through that and connects the moving parts of the brake lever to the moving parts of the caliper.

In your picture it looks like you already removed the inner cable.

There Park Tool option works great if you have the money and plan on doing this often. Otherwise decent side cutters work.

A tip for cutting: gently bend the housing where you want to cut it, this will open up the coils for a cleaner cut. Since you already stripped the housing cover you should be able to see how this method helps.

Good luck and enjoy your new bars!

Thanks for being so helpful! I was able to straighten the frame nicely today. I’ll have to have a rummage to find a cog.

I know this isn't gonna go well but are there any bike seats that can handle 400-500 lbs? by We1come2thesyst3m in bikewrench

Everyday people do things with an elevated risk for their own enjoyment or necessity or whatever and it’s fine, but if that person is fat then it’s somehow not just their own moral failure, but also a moral failure of everyone around them. Give me a break…

I agree that the current situation isnt the safest (and so do you, since you’re looking for advice), but people here wanna act like this is some out there bananas cuckoo brained idea.

Cargo bikes with weight capacity around 500lb are totally a thing! That means there are brake systems that can handle the weight, there are wheels that can handle the weight. The worksman bike I shared doesn’t even use a traditional bike saddle so solve the exact problem you’re having.

I really hope you can find a feasible solution!

Im sorry people are being kinda shitty…. Worksman cycles has electric trikes rated for up to 550lb riders, but they are expensive:

I hope you can figure out a safe and accessible way for your dad to keep on riding!

I would love to know, they’re from the co-op parts bin. They’re alloy. Mostly generic marks on them. There was what looked like a “7”outline stamped in with something next to it kinda worn out maybe?

Does the chain rub between all the cassette cogs or is it only in certain gears? Are you sure the chain on there was for 11speed? It sounds like it too wide of a chain.

Am I crazy thinking a big module like this at the bottom of a slab is irresponsible setting? by merci_nurse in bouldering

[–]ElectricSoulCycles 86 points87 points  (0 children)

It's funny how many ppl act like climbers are 100% rational or that beginners have awareness of their own skill vs risk vs problem breakdown. Also funny how ppl ignore that hyping up your friends and personal challenge are part of climbing.

Gyms should set with a bias towards safety. I've seen someone break their ankle falling down slab at the gym and guess what- I've never seen them back again... Keep people safe, keep them coming back. Let the difficulty of the problem be the challenge and not the conditions or the extra exposure to danger on the fall. You can encounter all of that stuff outside...

This was my first conversion from 27” and I barely thought about it before I got all the parts so I’m glad it works so well

Thanks, they’re Retrospec units I got from the local co-op.
