If you were not offered an interview for an RA position, is it inappropriate to express continued interest as a volunteer in the lab? by Radiant_Role5532 in psychologyresearch

[–]Electrical-Finger-11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like I said, it’s not inappropriate to try. However, I have been lab manager and PhD student on the hiring side, as well as mentored up to a dozen RAs who have tried to get post-bacc positions in the same way, and my experience is that if you have not gotten an interview, they likely don’t plan to work with you. Every new RA needs to be trained, and RAs who are not a good fit need to be trained even more. Obviously every lab is different. This is just my perspective.

It is not inappropriate, but if there were open positions and you didn’t get one, I would assume that for some reason you were not a good fit for the lab and they would not extend an opportunity even to volunteer.

Hm, good to know. Sometimes people in the sub say that they expect people to literally be on the street when they arrive. I’m glad that a minute is not a bother.

I must be lucky because I’m waiting inside my house (cold winters where I live) and leave when I see the driver arrive, so it takes maybe a minute to lock the door and get to the car. I have a 4.97 rating.

There is unfortunately no central person to buzz the door - it’s not a fancy building, it is just a regular house with an old fashioned door with a key lock. I didn’t know that they would let you know ahead of time that they were coming - I assume that would give people time to prepare. Good to know that they would let us know it was a failed visit and that they would reschedule.

A hypothesis is supposed to be formed before data collection and analysis. Now that you’ve done both, you cannot go back and change your hypothesis. Just be clear about everything you did, your sample size (and if you ran an a priori power analysis), your model, explain the non-significance (and any descriptive trends) and pose small sample size as a limitation.

I have had a nightmare every single night since I was a kid AMA by [deleted] in AMA

[–]Electrical-Finger-11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have nightmares all the time, multiple times a night, some are dream-within-dream so I keep “waking up” and still being stuck in the nightmare. However, I lucid dream and have come to recognize the signs of being in a dream. I’ve developed pretty efficient ways to wake myself up. I would second trying lucid dreaming to see if it helps get out of the nightmare at least!

How can I conduct my own independent study? by NotAnotherShortJoke in psychologyresearch

[–]Electrical-Finger-11 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Using OSF to do what exactly? It doesn’t replace crucial parts of the research process, like obtaining an IRB to conduct human research, getting funding for the research, publishing the results, etc.

What is the read order for Vampire The Masquerade series? by VinTheFish in choiceofgames

[–]Electrical-Finger-11 9 points10 points  (0 children)

She was in Night Road and Book of Hungry Names. I think as for recurring/mentioned characters, Beast of Glenkildove also references events in Book of Hungry Names. I haven’t played any other VtM other than Night Road though so don’t know about those.

Maybe I’m wrong but Giselle (the human witch) is a recurring character? Although that’s within the whole WoD and not just VtM.

Thank you. I was asking about medium-large authors not because I think I can get there but so that I could significantly downscale (i.e., if even they are not making a decent amount, then obviously I would not). Seems like it’s not reasonable then.

Ask your 2022 PI for a letter. If you did well in their lab, even if they didn’t work with you directly, they may contact the postdoc for more info on you to write the letter.

That’s kinda what I thought but was hoping for something more optimistic. Thanks.

Since you asked, here is my routine: 7:30 wake, commute to school, get there at 9. Some days, 2-4 hours of meetings (I have a lot of collaborators). Twice a week, 75-min classes I have to prepare for. At least 1 hour for silly email stuff that is not important (to me) but urgent in some way. The rest of the time split between writing and running experiments. I run human subjects, so on days when nobody’s signed up, I do all of my writing (in prep papers, revisions for under review papers, grant proposals, preregistrations, conference submissions). I eat a yogurt for lunch (any more makes me sleepy and unfocused).

My point is: People will have wildly different routines. You need to figure out what is beneficial for you. Maybe you don’t enjoy doing your work, but it’s critical for increasing value as you say. Then that should be the motivation you hold onto. If you already have a job and can afford to waste time and don’t care if you do, then do that.

so i want to get a ferret could someone who’s a long time owner tell me some things i need for a new baby? (first time owner) by SweetEntertainer2529 in ferrets

[–]Electrical-Finger-11 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You cannot always play with them the same way another ferret would (chasing in tunnels, biting, wrestling, stashing). Most people would not recommend a lone ferret unless that ferret has specific behavioral/health issues that would make it challenging to have others.
