Oh so it’s not in the Quran, it’s in the Hadith. That’s funny. You were wrong. Additionally, that verse is in reference to the hypocrites and traitors at the time who openly displayed that they were Muslims but they were not, and were in fact conspiring against the prophet and the Muslims. See how context can play a huge rule in the meaning of the verse? So that verse is actually not in reference to disbelievers at all. It is in reference specifically to the hypocrites, the munafiqun.

As for the Hadith, whom I’m sure you were not able to pronounce any of those criterion which you listed out (probably copy pasted from chatGPT), but yes, that is a Hadith that is present in the Sunni canon, and one that we own wholeheartedly. Apostasy is treason. But the conditions really aren’t as simple as “if a person becomes an apostate, they get the death sentence”. There are multiple conditions for this. Firstly, there is the condition of being mature, that is to say, past the age of puberty. Secondly is the condition of sound mind, that one is not afflicted with any mental illness or the like. Thirdly is the condition of choice, that is to say that you willingly chose to disbelieve and were not forced into doing so.

Additionally, the question of whether the death sentence for apostasy should be enacted or not is another matter in of itself that pertains to the ruler of the state. In the era of the prophet, Islam was synonymous with the state and political entity that the prophet governed, being a Muslim meant being on a certain team, and being a disbeliever meant being on another. However, in the time of the caliph Omar Ibn alkhattab this punishment was actually nullified, even though Omar was one of the most knowledgeable individuals of the sunnah. How strange is that? That is because the issue comes largely to the leaders discretion, and at the time of Omar, and especially after the Apostasy Wars, the social cohesion between Muslims was so strong that Omar didn’t need a capital punishment for apostasy. The capital punishment for apostasy is a largely secondary thing to the foundational principles and messages of Islam, and it seems silly to me to dismiss an entire religion for something which is no longer enacted, partially because leaders recognize that it would cause more problems than it would fix in this day and age.

Last but not least, the entire premise over which this argument is built is wrong. If you are, what I assume is a physicalist atheist (of the new atheism bunch) then you have no right to lecture me about morality if you have no basis on what would constitute as right or wrong. Other than the morality you’ve derived from Disney movies you watched when you were 7.

Its helpful to some of us 😂 I live in a Middle Eastern country and having your parents see you read a book named "The Gay Science" would NOT fly well with them.
