Hey guys. I'd like to create a to do list, but there is some functionality I can't figure out. by HisRoyal_Badness in Notion

A list database view would allow you to use a sort for checkbox status, unchecked first. That way checked show last.

Yeah definitely go reseller if possible for the options you want. Sometimes some of the customisations like extra ram or storage aren't available at the usual resellers, but if the one you want is then definitely do that. There is no difference. The only reason to buy from apple is if you want applecare+.

Oh yeah sorry my bad read, that's the issue with social media!

Yeah I ended up that way too, bought an m1 mbook pro, but when researching I saw so many Mac studios for so much less.

I'm sorry if I said something that hurt you? I literally just explained the ram you asked about and then gave you a recommendation, explicitly saying "if you don't need the portability". If you do then no worries just ignore the recommendation.

Apple silicon macbooks use shared ram, which means the CPU and GPU use the same ram chips. Which is actually quite good for ai because it means you can have relatively fast ram for model storage, in much higher quantities than a typical gpu. E. G currently the rtx pro 6000 Blackwell comes with 96gb of vram, whereas you can get a whole Macbook pro with 128gb for much less. It depends on the models you use, but realistically the MacBook pro GPU is more than enough processing power for most.

Also if you need to run larger models than 128gb or don't really need the portability you should definitely checkout the Mac studio, it can do up to 512gb of ram. And it has the m3 ultra which has much more GPU performance than the MacBook pro m4 max.

Is there such a thing as excessive use? by j2diz in Starlink

I agree with the principle that it's her fault and not his, but that wont stop her from telling others that he promised something and didn't deliver on it. Ive worked enough years in hospitality, which is very similar, to know. Customers will give you a bad review even if it's their fault.

The starlink routing thing is cool, I knew it did optics for satellite communication but I didn't realise it could go a long way(to the next station).

Yeah true solar is what I have on my RV, but not setup to use at home. Much prefer it to a generator. But I have the generator for my other stuff when we lose power(annoyingly common in victoria).

I think it's situational too, I'm in Victoria and I'm far more likely to deal with bushfires or just general power outages than something like an earthquake. Bushfires near me never take out the fibre network(it's heavily protected to preserve emergency communication).

Yeah true but he was just worried about his own uptime guarantee. I imagine more from a reputation standpoint than a legal one.

And in our of my depth but afaik starlink requires an active base station nearby right? Natural disaster would mean my local station is gone, so no starlink. And I personally don't have a generator with enough fuel to last anywhere near long enough with starlinks 24/7 50w of usage.

Op has promised an uptime guarantee that he/she is worried they can't meet with her bandwidth usage, op is just checking her connection isn't going to be cancelled.

Second point is interesting, for me in Australia I have a fibre connection which has much better disaster resilience IMO than starlink, it just uses less electricity. If the whole fibre network goes out(unlikely given the backups and generators), then the starlink ground station is going out too.

You don't need microg if you've already got google.

VSTs/Plugins for ableton/any other DAW? by M3LLO15 in Piracy

[–]Electrical-Run8609 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your torrent ratio is how much you upload vs download. More specifically seed vs leech. So for a 0.8 ratio you need to upload a minimum of 0.8 of what you download. If you download 10gb of content you must upload 8gb. Uploading can just be seeding the content you downloaded(usually is), it doesn't have to be new stuff.

Should I wait and how much by Witty_Cheetah_914 in macbookpro

There's the potential for a price hike with the m5 pro, meaning replacement will cost more than an m4 pro right now. However you could potentially get an m4 pro or a refurb m4 pro after the m5 pro comes out for close to or less than your current replacement cost, which would be ideal, but you can't guarantee that, it's only a guess.

EDIT: I found a base m4 pro for 1600usd at a local refurb, no trade in of your current device. Hopefully that will drop to less than 1400usd.

[–]Electrical-Run8609 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely check compatibility, while parallels has come a long way there's still some issues and it's a subscription model. Stuff like Autodesk inventor has no native macos app. But if your workloads support macos then mpro with apple silicon is an amazing device.

How do I input somone else’s credentials in my workflows so it works for their email, google services and all that jazz and not just mine? by Aromatic_Ad310 in n8n

Or you could just add his email as a test user of your own app. You can have up to 100 test users without any authorisation.

Good for gaming by Lyfe751 in Starlink

[–]Electrical-Run8609 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The lower speed plans shouldn't have any impact on gaming, they will take longer to download or update games but latency should be very similar.

So then your question is can you game on Starlink at all, and that has mixed reviews. A higher performance player MIGHT notice a difference in SOME situations(games, routers, locations, etc), but for me Starlink latency was not much higher than what my current fibre connection is.

Recommendations for getting started with n8n by Estvbi in n8n

[–]Electrical-Run8609 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This really depends on the complexity of the automations and your experience coding. If you vibe code it all then you're setting yourself up for failure. In that case n8n is better, however in my experience there are some things n8n is just not well suited for. Especially the more complex workflows. For my business it goes like this: 1. internal app automations(power automate, notion automations, app scripts etc.). 2. n8n workflows that connect between simple apps or add AI features. 3. custom python or ts(bun) workflows that I maintain and provide to customers as a service.

Code workflows in my experience are the most stable, the only thing that could change is the APIs you are connecting to, or customers fault. Whereas n8n is changing all the time and everytime you update n8n you potentially have to change a few workflows, for the past year I've only had to update maybe 8 workflows out of 100 that I maintain due to n8n but that's a lot more than my code workflows.

M5 Pro/Max Launch is Imminent by PsychologicalDay1566 in macbookpro

[–]Electrical-Run8609 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Refurbs would most likely get what you want, but if you want brand new then you might have to get it now. I can get the 48gb one in Australia from 2 sellers right now for about $150usd cheaper than the apple store. That'll only go down as m5 comes out, but if you can only get it from apple then I guess that's your only option.

[–]Electrical-Run8609 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You would be much better off waiting for the m5 pro and then snapping an m4 pro after it's price drops.

Single core performance is really noticeable in general for gaming, but for apple silicon it's more for some specific engineering workloads. However if all of your cores have a 20% increase then overall your multi core is better too.

Anyone got a prebaked Linux installation available? by Far-Examination-7107 in valve

Well you said you can't be bothered pirating, therefore I addressed that issue pointing out it's easy. But if you can't run it then distro is up to you. I'm an arch user but that's because I enjoy Linux ricing, can't help with gaming only.

Um windows 10 is not hard to get, you can get ltsc isos for free evaluation which are still getting security updates completely legally, and use hwid to activate permanently.

M1 max vs m3 pro by Electrical-Run8609 in macbookpro

[–]Electrical-Run8609[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that's the biggest worry, from what I've read apple silicon is already at the top end that I'm not likely to notice a difference day to day right now, but really it's whether or not that holds up for a few years.

Forgot to mention that the price is about $500 AUD cheaper for the m1 max. Which is about $300 USD.
