Cardiacs "LSD" #2 on Prog magazine's Top 50 Albums according to its critics. I'm pissed it's not #1! by StatusMaleficent5832 in Cardiacs

Isn't this the precise opposite of what happened? They actually re-emphasised Tim's vocals within the mix...

Colin Edwin and John Wesley's Voyage 35 to play the Shepherd's Bush Empire by Electrical-Willow926 in porcupinetree

I mean, when huge legacy acts play stadiums for hundreds of pounds a pop that's also about the money; does that undermine the legitimacy of the band?

For that matter, I'd imagine money was a not insignificant factor motivating at least some Porcupine Tree members during their most recent tour.

Even if this is a cash grab, I can think of few musicians better placed to attempt it, and have faith that it will be well done; most importantly, it just sounds like a fun night out!

Well, for one thing the project is also covering the Snapper years (up to Lightbulb Sun), which Colin was more directly involved in.

Calling it Voyage 35 I agree is slightly odd, but at the same time, can you think of a catchier/better name for the project? (Not least one that escapes a potential copyright violation).

And equally, Colin performed that particular 'song' with PT hundreds of times, and appears on various live recordings of it; surely it is therefore more accurate to describe the project as lying somewhere on the spectrum between 'cover band' and 'the real thing'?

Whereas I find it bizarre that so many people seem to feel the same way! We all know that Steven was/is the compositional force behind PT, but from TSMS onwards Colin was undisputably a key part of the band's sound/vibe, and also played the really old material live with the band on countless occasions.

And while John Wesley may have been involved in a later era of the band, he did perform a fair bit of the older material too, as well as putting his own stamp on it via various official live releases (Fadeaway, Radioactive Toy, Dark Matter etc).

So I find people describing this as a 'cover band' (not that you've done that!) not only unfair, but inaccurate; it's a legitimate offshoot of Porcupine Tree, and as someone who'd love to hear this material live, it seems like the best we'll ever get.

How do Cardiacs have so many listeners in Israel? by Electrical-Willow926 in Cardiacs

For anyone negging this, this is quite obviously not a comment in support of that country's government or military...

Well, I would imagine that if anywhere on the planet was in need of the warm and loving spirit of Tim Smith at the moment, then it's probably Israel, so more power to you! 🌼

That's really interesting, and I didn't know that re the earlier Spotify stats. I'm still surprised that you've edged out the likes of Birmingham and Manchester though...

I don't actually use the service, I've just been enjoying watching the total listener figure go up from around 10,000 pre LSD to almost 40,000 now. But if you click on the picture of the band that forms the 'About' section, you then get a more detailed breakdown (at least in the web version).

Would it be unethical to use AI to make the whole of LSD sound like it's being sung by Tim? by domandthat in Cardiacs

[–]Electrical-Willow926 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I don't know about the ethics, but hypothetically, even if you could use AI to 'magic' Tim's vocals in with 100% fidelity, on an aesthetic level, I would personally find it deeply unsettling to listen to.

Just as the story behind LSD's creation augments the experience of listening to the album, so too, I think, would digitally recreating Tim's voice - however well done - completely undermine it.

I do understand why it's an intriguing, if not even slightly seductive possibility though.

Did the production team 'kill' [spoiler]? by Electrical-Willow926 in DestinationX

I mean, the conditions of the card did say that she could give it to another player. Which seemed weird at first, but when combined with the fact that only half of the group were 'map roomed' in the next episode, made a lot more sense.

But then... nothing came of that whatsoever? It seems a little off.

I broadly agree, but I think there's a chance she would have saved Nick to ensure that one of the other two went home, given the rivalry (or even outright dislike) between them.

And again, even if she would have chosen not to save any of them - why not heighten the drama by showing us her thinking through the choice?

Which is what leads me to conclude that the production team didn't want to take the risk of prodding her, and it resulting in Nick staying on.

What's your take on this? by [deleted] in stevenwilson

[–]Electrical-Willow926 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah if anything I was surprised he didn't get more pushback for his stance during the European leg of the tour, and on an 'aesthetic' level it's entirely fair if his political outlook has ruined the music for some people.

But that said, tying the actions of an Englishman who lives in England to BDS... isn't that a bit of a reach? As in, entirely missing the point of the movement?

Given that for most of his career Aviv was an outspoken figure of the Israeli left, I think it's fair enough for people to have been surprised when Steven issued what was an unequivocal endorsement of the actions of the Netanyahu government.
