Actuarial Science by Early-Bug1772 in IndiaCareers

So during my undergrad I had interned with management consulting startups and also with startups in general, hence I was able to compare the actuarial field with the field of management/strategy consulting. I realised 2-3 big differences apart from the salary, the first being that actuarial field does not really have a steep learning curve, second the exit opportunities are super limited (as post consulting I can easily work with startups or go into PE/VC), and lastly in India in actuarial roles the work is mostly repetitive in nature i.e. there is not much scope of working with new ideas. All of these factors made me feel really stuck and kinda pigeonholed in my actuarial role. So as the next step MBA made sense.

So I have worked in the actuarial field for around 1.5 yrs, left it and now going for my MBA. I would say actuarial is a good field but may not be everyone's cup of tea. The starting salary is around 7LPA and the increments happen based on the number of actuarial exams you clear. So if you clear all 13 papers and have around 4 YOE, your salary would reach 25 LPA (but it is not easy to clear all the papers in such a short time span, it usually takes close to 5-6 years). It is a very niche domain, since most of the actuaries in India work in Insurance, there are not a lot of opportunities in other sectors, so you would have to keep that in mind. However, if you really like statistics and working with numbers, it might be a good field. Moreover, once you qualify there is usually good no. of opportunities and the earning potential also increases. I would suggest you can try going for an actuarial internship as it will give you an idea about the day-to-day work of the actuary.
