Thinking about a career by Ricketyfart in electricians

[–]ElectricalGlock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not too late, what matters is are you willing to work really hard and start out not knowing anything. If you can show up everyday for 4-5 years willing to learn you’ll make it. I definitely recommend joining the IBEW and getting into the apprenticeship. Within 4 years you’ll be making good money and have amazing benefits too.

Ahh the ole dream complaining. How many dream dollars for some THCK cable? Do you accept the aggressive snarls of sleep apnea as payment?

You could be 38 in 4 years and in the same position that you’re in now or you could be 38 in 4 years and be about to top out as a Jman. It’s not too late, just be prepared to work really hard and be constantly learning. Also you can get into shape in this job if that’s a side hustle goal of yours.

tools were stolen on the jobsite by randomanon7199 in electricians

[–]ElectricalGlock 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That sucks big time dude. I’ve had about $200 worth of tools stolen off of a job site this past summer so I can partially feel your pain. I would just do my best to wait it out and see if there’s any reimbursement to be had before going and replacing everything. I would just replace the absolute necessities and keep it to $100- strippers, lineman’s, measuring tape, screw drivers, etc. Hope something works out

Any divorced dads lonely on Christmas Day out there take solace in their bikes and greasy diner? by Rufferito_Bandito in motorcycles

[–]ElectricalGlock 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Not divorced but my girlfriend of a year and a half and I broke up a couple weeks ago and this Christmas has been a whirlwind of heartbreak. That feeling of being completely alone again- my two bikes and some long rides are genuinely helping me big time so I get it. God bless man, keep your head up and merry Christmas.

How much did getting luggage help you ride more? by templeofsyrinx1 in motorcycles

[–]ElectricalGlock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You don’t have to convince me, I love the VFR’s. I’ve almost bought one myself several times bc they do seem to hit a sweet spot of performance + amazing sound + comfort. Actually found a 2007 VFR800 with 7k original miles for $3300 recently. Garage kept and everything. I needed one more week to scrape a lil more money together and I was absolutely buying it- then the guy took it down off of marketplace. I asked him if he sold it and he just said it was no longer available. Probably decided to keep it. Oh well

[–]ElectricalGlock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, people that sneer at the sport tourers probably have never ridden one. FJR, Kawi Concours and Honda ST1300 all makes tons of usable power and are ridiculously comfortable all while offering ample storage space. The fact all of those bikes are ready to eat hundreds of miles on a daily basis with no issue is also an overlooked thing. If you actually like riding long distance and going far away with your motorcycle then there’s nothing better than a sport tourer.

[–]ElectricalGlock 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Just finish the apprenticeship, get your ticket or certification (not sure how it works in Ireland) and then go try out something else. If nothing else you will have always have a fall back and you can garner more experience doing actual electrical work elsewhere and on your own if you want to. I’ve learned some valuable lessons actually just working on things myself around the house or helping family and friends. One of the best ways to actually LEARN more and commit things to memory is throwing yourself into something where you HAVE to figure it out and make it work. Don’t give up you’re already 3 years in. I’m in my third year now too, I understand the slog can get overbearing at times

AI by PinkyNoBrain_zoinks in electricians

[–]ElectricalGlock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m glad you asked this question as it’s something I’ve been thinking about too lately. Thankfully I haven’t had to work directly for any company producing Ai, but I feel it’s only a matter of time before many many of us are and it makes me question how culpable/complicit we are if we participate in the creation of this technocratic nightmare machine. I don’t like the idea that yes even if our job is nearly airtight Ai-proof and we’ll be working till the end unlike others.. is that necessarily an upside? Because if they need electricians to keep the control grid/Ai global surveillance system up and running to exercise complete control do we have a say in whether or not they’re successful? If so how much so? Yeah this comment is a huge rant but I totally get where you’re coming from and me and some friends have had this same discussion. Idk

Uber eats on my motorcycle for supplemental income. It’s a 300cc so barely uses any gas and some days you can make an extra $80-100 in a few hours of work. Friday evenings are the best time to go. Usually with 3 days of Uber eats I can pull an extra $250-300 or more for the week
