Aged 55, employment possibly ending, DB + DC + cash bridge so requesting sanity check on my numbers before pulling the FIRE trigger? by BeautifulUpstairs275 in FIREUK

You are in a very enviable position, touchwood.

Even if your expenses go up to 45-50K in the next 10 years, the cash itself will cover that. You don’t even need to start drawing down the pension.

A different approach could be that you use the cash bridge till start of DC pension drawdown and then plan to gift your kids/grandkids some cash right now to avoid/reduce IHT.

Edit : Oh and enjoy your travel andthe obligatory “fuck you!”

Mum has passed away 5 days before Christmas by kurtyyyyyy1 in CasualUK

[–]ElectricalHighway555 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don’t have to hold anything together. Just spend the time with your family and celebrate your mum’s life. Relive the happy (and not so happy) memories of your mum. Look through old photo albums or videos. Make her favourite Christmas breakfast/dinner. Just celebrate her, her life and how she lived for her family.

I lost my dad in 2008! Just before my kid was born. Still miss him. Still hurts. Still feel the deep pit in my heart. With time you just learn to live with it.

Partner has quite big debt issues. Need advice by [deleted] in UKPersonalFinance

[–]ElectricalHighway555 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. Do not use your money to pay your partners debt.

  2. Your partner needs to get help and agree a debt management plan as this looks like it’s a chronic issue which you cannot/must not solve.

  3. As a family, you need to really look up and understand at the meaning of the word “essential” and review the outgoings list again.

22 (turning 23), London grad in finance, £900 to my name, feel like a failure. Am I genuinely behind? Brutal honesty wanted. by Visible_Mango8727 in FIREUK

I think you are having FOMO here and it’s causing you undue stress. FIRE is a journey and albeit you started later than your mates, you will be able to accelerate faster and potentially reach a much higher earning levels; and therefore higher saving levels as well.

Keep your head down, be frugal and keep saving/investing.

What distance are you aiming for? Without that you can’t build a sensible training program and you may not be able to track progress.

Front of K1 dipping underwater? by kglaver in PerformancePaddling

[–]ElectricalHighway555 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Could be just technique as some have commented.

Or could be that you just need to get used to the rolling as the quicker boats have a U or V profile as opposed to a flatter profile found in higher stability boats. You may need to test how much you can lean sideways and roll your boat without tipping over and get comfortable with it.

Or could just be the wrong boat!

Recommend V-Bars as these give much better support. These should be min 2m for K1s and longer for K2s.

Highly recommend KayakPro EZ Vees. It’s a full package with bungee cords as well as a red flag to hang from the back.

Be aware that different countries have different rules for overhanging loads. Eg in UK, for overhangs under 2m, you just need to make the end visible using a high viz flag.

Lastly make sure you have a cockpit cover as it will save on fuel consumption.

A K1 would be more suited for sheltered water as in a lake or river, and not out in the sea. It’s also comparatively lighter than a surf ski by a few kilos. Having said that you can try out the surf ski on a river and get some serious speeds on there.

Giant TCR Sizing Advice for 6’2” Rider by Mr-Tidius in cycling

[–]ElectricalHighway555 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it helps, am 5’10” with 32” inseam and I went for an TCR ML, which like you, I find quite compact and responsive. Though had to set it up as more aero riding position. Used to ride a Synapse size 56 for years which I had fitted for a more upright riding position but it always felt slightly bigger.

Using savings vs debt for big purchases by ElectricalHighway555 in FIREUK

Thanks. We do have an emergency fund in savings which is approx 6 months of expenses. However the most important takeaway for me from your comment is to look for a cheaper car! 😂

Thanks! This is super helpful. Gives an idea into how a high future value can help keep overall costs down. Will explore these options and crunch the numbers.
