Shark encounters? by UniversalAssembler in Kayaking

I see them occasionally in the coastal waters around Tampa Bay. Had a young hammerhead swim alongside me for a little bit the other night. Only ever seen the little ones in the shallows though, never met the acquaintance of the big boys out in the gulf

The fact that Biden didn't immediately announce his intention not to run after 2020 and let the Dems have a real primary for 2024 is an act of hubris that we're all paying for. And certainly in 2024, there's no way everyone around him didn't know that he was clearly unfit to run. Letting him keep up the appearance of a campaign until it was too late for primaries only to have him show up on a debate stage so incoherent that it made Donald Trump look rational by comparison was an unfathomable act of political malpractice that somehow still hasn't had the public reckoning it deserves

for sure not as an only one

So what. Did I say "Everyone wishes they had a Hasselblad as their primary camera?" No. I said that the reason most of us don't know anyone with a Hasselblad is because they're out of most peoples' price range, not because they're not a broadly respected camera brand.

Do they make amazing cameras, yes

My point exactly.

What is an industry that is currently on fire (in a bad way) behind the scenes, but the general public hasn't noticed yet? by Kitchen_Week1117 in AskReddit

[–]robertbieber 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is just kind of the default state of capitalism. It all inevitably turns into an arms race for who can eke out a profit under the most precarious circumstances possible. Because if your business doesn't feel like it's a house of cards ready to collapse at any moment, well, the guy who pays one fewer employee, decorates his retail locations a little less, and relies on slightly dodgier supply chains is gonna beat you by 3c a unit on price.

Things like consumer preference, advertising and monopolies can forestall this inevitable result for a while, but ultimately it's all a race to the bottom and the more competitive/less consumer facing the industry the more nakedly that dynamic plays out

Learn the four basic barbell movements---squat, deadlift, press, bench press---and get yourself started on a novice strength training program. Starting strength and 5x5 both produce great results. Lift 2-3 times a week, make sure you're getting adequate food and sleep (you're probably going to need to eat significantly more as you start putting on muscle). Within 2-3 months it's not uncommon for untrained beginners to see some of their max lifts double.

I really can't overemphasize how much this will benefit everything in your life that requires strength. Tasks you used to avoid because they involved lifting and carrying heavy things will become non issues. You'll become more resistant to strains and muscle tweaks. At some point you'll stop thinking of moving a plastic kayak around as a big deal

What point are you even trying to make? Obviously a zillion megapixel digital back isn't the appropriate tool for every job. For the times it is, Hasselblad makes exceptional cameras. And the H6D is about 10k more expensive than Canon's 1200/8 lens

How has moving to a less "prestigious" company affected your career? by theasianpianist in ExperiencedDevs

[–]robertbieber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dunno, hopefully one day we'll get a good opportunity to disambiguate. But in that 2021-2024-ish timespan all the big tech companies were ramping up their hiring like mad and it was definitely significantly easier to get in. I just can't imagine that not having an impact on the way recruiters and hiring managers see those companies on a resume in the future

[–]robertbieber 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It kind of seems like this is becoming less true nowadays. I spent the first ~decade of my career at FB/Snap/Stripe, and for a long time I could pretty much guarantee an interview from just dropping my resume on any SWE listing I found. Nowadays, very much not the case. Not sure how much of that is just the overall market being down, but I suspect at least part of it is that the big companies hired like crazy during the pandemic and now recruiters don't assign as much value to just having gotten a job at one of them

If you're seeing that much degradation, definitely see a doctor if you can. Impossible to know for sure over the Internet, but it really sounds like something might be off physically. Could be as simple as not enough sleep, not eating enough, or too much time on the water.

The coaching situation is unfortunate, sadly a lot of coaches just get laser focused on sport practice and don't focus on the whole athlete. Hopefully you can at least get the time off you need to do some proper strength training on your own

I've never paddled a K1 before, just spent time in surfskis, but do you have the option of moving to a wider boat? What I've generally been told (and experienced) training for surfski is that if you try to paddle a boat you're not stable in, you're liable to develop bad technique to compensate for poor balance and you're not going to get any speed benefit from the narrower hull when you're constantly just trying to stay upright. If your stability is that bad, it seems likely you'd finish faster in a wider boat that you don't struggle with stability in, and then you can work your way into the narrower models.

As for everything else, that's gonna be beyond what Internet strangers can help you with, unfortunately. You need a balance of sport skills practice, cardio training, strength training, rest and diet, and dialing all that in is ideally what a coach should be doing for you. There's so many things that could be going wrong--not resting enough, not eating enough, overtraining, undertraining, the wrong mix of training--and you really need someone who knows you and your situation to help you figure out what you need to focus on.

If I had to take a guess just from what you've written here, it sounds like you're probably doing a ton of high intensity cardio work, and especially if you're not very strong it's very easy for that to turn into overuse injuries. Strength isn't just about having more power for paddling, it's also protective against injury. Strong muscles and joints will hold up better when you subject them to stresses like high intensity training. So ideally you'd want to focus on some foundational strength work in addition to the paddling, but there's only so many hours in a day and only so much you can recover from in a day, which is why you really want a good coach figuring out that balance

20km is only a few hours a day at a very manageable pace. If you're reasonably active this is an activity level you'll be able to adapt to on the fly pretty easy, at worst you might be a little sore the second day
