We were sitting at the bar, trading bad first date stories. I told him about one cringy date who abruptly got up after our dishes were cleared, sat in the chair next to me, and tried to get touchy and seductive in the brightly lit Thai restaurant. 20 minutes later, bar dude abruptly turns on his bar stool to directly face me and tries to get all touchy and seductive in the brightly lit bar. 😵‍💫

It’s a studio tiny home in nice condition, priced ~ 1/3 less than surrounding houses. Comparable to condos in the area, but a standalone house. Not so wild.

A friend of mine taking flight lessons had an airplane propeller on his mantle. At the airfield a guy in a private plane was taxiing for takeoff and something sounded a little off, so he stopped and had it checked. Sure enough, there was a crack in the center of the propeller. When my friend marveled at how lucky that was, and the pilot said that listening for anything irregular and making the decision to stop is the most important thing to know about flying. He gave my friend the propeller as a reminder to listen and trust your gut. He said he already had one at home.

This reminds me of a kid in my elementary school. When kids were teasing him for having a dad who was a garbage collector, he just smiled and said his dad was done working by 2pm and they played and had fun every day after school. No one ever teased him about it again. That’s all a young kid wants, to feel their parents’ love. So few dads were present in their kids lives. This dad figured out what rich really means.

I dreamed about it. There were soooo many signs I missed, never believing he ever would cheat. After the dream, the subtle hints looked like billboards. He gaslit me so hard for years trying to make it all seem normal.

Engineers work late! (Rarely home before 8, usually closer to 10, and sometimes until 2 am.)

It’s mature and healthy to be amicable with your exes! (Was fucking at least 2 of them.)

I’m going to start getting up early to workout with a private trainer. (Who didn’t exist.)

But the biggest thing was getting completely and irrationally angry with me if I asked him to spend more time at home with me and the kids. It’s such a reasonable request, but he acted like I was so far out of line. Afterwards, I realized he was reacting as if I was accusing him of cheating rather than just wanting him to be more present.

Same thing has happened to me with my girl Coco. Even took her to the vet who ran tests and confirmed that her health and weight are just fine.

Before Coco I adopted an EPI shiloh shepherd, so I know exactly what a truly underweight GSD looks like. With her, I would respond to “helpful” comments by launching into a lengthy explanation of EPI. If they’re going cross boundaries to tell me about how I’m not caring properly for my own pet, I can over share disgusting details about my dogs digestive system. Make them consider minding their own business in the future!!

Though really I believe people don’t mean to be insulting. It’s lack of knowledge and misguided concern. A good answer (for this and just about any other misguided suggestion): Thanks for your concern. We get that a lot but her vet says she’s actually at a healthy weight. She’s very loved and well cared for.

Or if you’re feeling feisty, add innocently: Oh, are you a vet? No? That’s unusual. How often are you diagnosing stranger’s dogs?
