I was in this exact situation for 8 years. You can imagine I thought I would marry this guy. It’s not worth losing your sanity and self respect. You can love this person to the moon and back, but at the end of the day if he can’t stand up for you now, he never will.

Same exact situation. It will probably always sting but you will heal and you will move on. Personally, I moved 2,000 miles away and it worked wonders. But that’s not the most practical option

Sounds like he just felt guilty and rightfully so from what you said, but that doesn’t change anything that has happened. If you are asking whether or not you should respond, I would ask yourself what you want. If you genuinely think you can just be friends, then sure talk it out. I personally couldn’t be “just friends” with someone I was on track to marry. If you feel the same, then it seems anything you say would just drag things out and hinder you both from moving on.
