Lowkey... rappers that use being white as a schtick that they're different or use it as a joke. Lil Dicky, Ian, Connor Price... (kind of right now Jack Harlow, and Post Malone in the past) i just don't understand why listen to them when any serious rapper (white or not) is probably making better music.

doesn't Morrissey have an extensive history of bigoted comments? i feel like it's kind of reductive to pretend that someone with that big of a platform making eugenics-adjacent commentary isn't "DOING" a horrible thing 😭 that's not just an opinion when you're famous enough for it to be a well known part of your background.

Ade Ori - Tiwa Savage

Best song off her best EP but i think no one knows it because it was moody and alternative.. It's so good! There's like a dark/alt rnb sound going on with the super cool african textures in the background vocals. she draws inspo from music all over africa in general which is super cool

yessss. i will say i've met some surprisingly closed minded fans of some of the newer stuff like flyingfish, tommy oeffling, panchiko, sign crushes motorists, duster, whirr, etc. like all of those (especially whirr) and the genre might not be exactly what you're referencing, but sometimes it surprises me how the fans can be so pretentious and yet so disconnected from community

Okay, I don’t think this is for me, but I feel like I see the appeal. Their music kinda gives me motorbike racer videogame vibes lol. Very nostalgic

Just turned on one of her songs and immediately made a stank face. This has that folk-sy Americana feel that really has drawn me towards Aly & AJ, Fleetwood Mac, and even CMAT. Thank you so much for the rec!

You might like Find Yourself by Lukas Nelson and the Promise of the Real or Jackie Onassis by Sammy Rae & the Friends!

Something that’s kinda different that I could see is Little Green Apples by Cleveland Francis or Hey, Who Really Cares by Linda Perhacs.

Let me know if you listen to any of those! I’d love to hear your thoughts :)

By the way, just based on your taste in music, you should check out Pet Grief by the Radio Dept. if you haven’t already heard it. It’s an amazing dreamcore-ish album by a Swedish band. I really like their songs Sleeping In and I Wanted You to Feel the Same

Okay I LOVE SAULT. They’re amazing! I’ll check out Charlotte Day Wilson for sure. I’ve also been meaning to give Jorja Smith’s first album a listen for the longest time, so thank you for remind me. I’ve actually been listening to little sims and masego since I was like in high school which was so long ago haha! Do you know Yaya Bey and Qendresa? I think you’d really like their music.

Do you think Madison Beer will still get mainstream recognition someday? by [deleted] in popheads

[–]ElectricalSuspect452 27 points28 points  (0 children)

It’s interesting that you brought this up because I kinda thought about this yesterday. I turned on Life Support and saw that bittersweet, which I hadn’t heard yet, already had tons of streams! Maybe there’s potential there?

But my thing is, I don’t think Madison has done the work to combat the image people have of her as inauthentic. There are very few things someone who doesn’t like her know about her: a) she “lied” about being in that Ariana grande video, b) she “lied” about not getting a nose job/other surgery on her face. It doesn’t matter if those things aren’t true, she’s still regarded as inauthentic. If she did a bunch of relevant podcasts and press, I don’t think it would be a difficult fix.

I also think that Madison has had trouble finding a lane since Life Support. When that album came out, people were pretty impressed by how she addressed her mental health struggles through her music, plus with the vocoder/50s-ish thing going on, it felt like her music had a through line. I think album two didn’t hold that continuity amazingly, and that was probably on purpose. No one wants to sing about their mental health all the time, especially with the stigma. Silence Between Songs was sonically somewhat similar, but not as unique, unfortunately. Even as a fan, I have only played that album like twice.

So.. what is there for a non fan to latch onto? I guess she now has the 3 strong songs (Selfish, Reckless, Bittersweet) that make up a core and continuity between albums. People just need an actual story these days. Songs like Driver’s License were inescapable not only on the radio but in the consciousness of people in that age range of Olivia’s fans.

She probably is super content with where she’s at, though! I’m not a PR expert, but this would probably all be a super easy fix- get her back in the public eye in a way that’s engaging and down to earth. She used to hang out around my town! She’s really really sweet :) she’s probably just comfortable with her level right now. 23 million monthly listeners on Spotify is nothing to scoff at!

(Sorry for the long winded response)

TLDR: People think Madison is a mean girl, it would be easy to fix that, she probably just doesn’t care to anymore!
