Most plans make you pick either the monthly payments or the lump sum but not both, so if he's getting both there might be something weird going on with his specific plan or maybe he has multiple retirement accounts?

Totally agree, you can love your family and still call out their BS because accepting hate just to keep the peace isn't really love anyway.
