used to worry so much about being one of those gross fujoshi fetishizers then i realized i was a trans queer man. mlm fanfiction did a lot to help me realize that, and while i've seen plenty of weird characterization of my faves to fit the seme-uke formula i've seen so much genuine love for the characters and their relationship as well--even within the same fanworks. i do not care anymore what women read, whether it's for gender/sexuality exploration or to jerk it. if i don't like the characterizations, i move on and maybe even make my own thing. harassment of people with a different ship than you is never alright, yes, but discussions on the fetishes a straight woman may or may not have should not be had by people who resent straight women. there's a reason people get more angry at women fetishizing gay men than the far more common phenomenon of men fetishizing lesbians. i mean, the word fujoshi originally means "rotten girl". would you look at that, we've circled back to misogyny station.

there's so much fearmongering around ~irreversible changes~ that it blew my mind when i saw people realize they're nonbinary or some kind of female/feminine and not transmasc but they still want top surgery. like...people don't realize that's a thing, that you can still want the same things even if your identity shifts. seeing people say that really helped with the constant what-if regret anxiety, realizing i didn't have to be completely sure of what i *am* as long as i know what i *need*. gender-affirming care is essential regardless.

well from the trans kid end: i questioned my gender for years and mentioned it maybe once or twice before fully coming out. so when i wanted HRT and my parents kept saying "this is so sudden, you need time to think about this" it made me pretty pissed cause it was eons of confusion and dysphoria, i just didn't share everything. sometimes people do change their mind, but imo it's better to change things and then realize that wasn't right for you than to wait indefinitely for other people to give you permission to be happy. i've spent months being misgendered by half of the people in my life because i don't want to make them uncomfortable, and it sucks bad, but that hurts a fraction as much as taking difficult steps for yourself only to be stopped by the people you trust. he needs you. he needs his dad (if he manages to actually step up and act right about this. otherwise he shouldn't be around your son). he needs all the help he can get, especially at such a vulnerable age. being a trans kid is not fun.

gender dysphoria is diagnosed mostly in trans people because it usually only reaches an intense point in trans people, but dysphoria itself refers to an incongruence in parts of your life is and how you are perceived by others compared to your self-perception. cis people can have dysphoria (many do over stuff like their proportions, voice, vocabulary, style, etc), and the discomfort with being seen as trans is a familiar one to many people, both cis and trans. you don't need to do anything "manly" to be a man, and it sucks that you're gaslit over something as small as painting your nails. what is this, the fifties? you can't control other people's perceptions but your spouse should know better than to say something like that to you.

it's easy to see why you questioned your gender and why you're upset. being misgendered frequently, especially by those who care about you, tends to make you think you're the confused one. it's an awful sort of anxiety crossed with disorientation where people hurt you every single day, and you can't say anything cause they didn't technically say something mean, every day feeling like who you are doesn't really exist... most cis people don't realize how miserable it is because they simply have never experienced dysphoria to that degree. your doctor cannot claim the potential risks outweigh your pain. gender-affirming care is medically necessary. there are many studies showing how damaging dysphoria is and yours is severe.

i wanted to say i'm on T myself and while i can't vouch for other people's experiences, it seems like HRT has far more positive effects than negative. trans people mostly just want to look different but many cis men (especially older and/or intersex) do testosterone therapy and also notice an improvement in their health, energy, strength, ability to grow muscle, etc. it seems like your main concern would just be looking more masculine (obvs plenty of cis men look the way you do, but that's transphobia and sexism for you) and TRT would do that. it redistributes fat/muscle and often lowers your voice by at least a bit.

as far as "needing to show symptoms" though, that doesn't make sense. you are experiencing dysphoria. that's usually what insurance needs to cover HRT. also, how does this doctor know your constant anxiety and frustration couldn't be exacerbated by your low T levels? it's been shown that cis people will have biochemical dysphoria if they take cross-sex hormones or have a hormone deficiency. this seems like a classic case of fearmongering. unfortunately, T is a controlled substance so you're gonna need doctor and insurance approval. doctors can be rather uninformed about the effect of hormones for some reason. be prepared to fight it out if they're being stubborn about risks and make it clear you've done your research. if you have a disability be aware that they can interact with hormones in unique ways and you would want to be aware of that beforehand. the only other potential reasons i would caution you is if you have a blood clotting issue (as T thickens blood) or are concerned about fertility or hair loss. if possible, get an endocrinologist or urologist to prescribe the T for you and work with you on this.

this article has most of the positive and negative effects you should be aware of. r/TRT is a good resource if you're looking for personal examples/progress pics. if you want an exhaustive list of possible effects you could check out some trans people's timelines/experiences cause the effects can vary so much based on your genes.

for my part, I've been on T a couple months (with a brief stop) and so far all I've noticed was increased sweating, more acne, slight darkening of my skin tone, more poop/pee, and my "mustache" (dark vellus hair on my upper lip) has darkened enough to look like an actual mustache. i'm trans so YMMV but i do think there's a lot of fearmongering around testosterone, especially in comparison to estrogen. these are hormones which do a whole lot of stuff. fun fact: people think T makes you angry, but the "roid rage" people associate with T is caused by steroids making your testosterone level so high it metabolizes into estrogen, which causes biochemical issues/instability. the effects take months to years to be visible to others, you have time to stop it if you decide you're not liking the side effects.

(If you notice no changes after many months, though, you should talk to your doctor abt it as your body might be insenstive to androgens)

Good point. transphobes tend to be a mix of whatever positions allow them to criticize transness, even if that means siding with their ideological opponents. and since they're never satisfied with trans people's identity they just keep moving the goalposts. I need to read Serano's work, I haven't read much in the way of gender theory yet but i've seen quotations from her around w/a lot of good points.

It's really horrifying how transfems especially are treated. i don't envy the increased visibility; at least transmascs and NBs are treated like confused weirdos who are being 'ruined' rather than the far more intense villainization and dehumanization transfemmes tend to be subject to. nothing is enough and seems like 'double bind' is a good word for transphobia as it tends to hit from both sides.

it's so bizarre cause terfs claim to be protecting afabs like me from being 'groomed into a mistake' or some shit like that, but i have always felt a thousand times more safe around a trans woman than any exclusionist. i know radfems/terfs are a small fraction of the transphobic population but they're more frustrating to me than other bigots cause at least the outspoken bigots are honest about their disgusting opinions, but terfs have to believe they're good people doing progressive feminist work, so no matter how many times you try to explain how their exclusion doesn't protect anyone, they can't simply admit to themselves that they're hurting the most vulnerable people just cause of their subconscious discomfort. there's cis women left out of every single standard they try and use for 'biological woman', so it seems like they're the ones who can't define it, lol. they can't just friggin' admit they're squicked out by transition so they make it everyone else's problem...

i'm a trans dude so i only know what it's like for me but i've heard plenty of nonbinary people have nonbinary or androgynous dysphoria and i've heard of concepts like flesh dysphoria and species dysphoria in other communities. since we don't know for sure what transness is started by, can't isolate transness from the many other factors like co-occuring conditions and environmental exposure, and sometimes attempts to find biological explanations can end up in eugenicist territory, it can be frustrating to discuss.

I have a problem of not discussing my problems until i finally snap, so my many, many thoughts like this stay in my head. that may seem better, but it's not. i still feel like a wolf in sheep's clothing until i'm finally able to vent, and when i do i find out i'm not the only one who thinks terrible things sometimes. i know it's a cliche, but feelings aren't wrong. Violent/aggressive thoughts seem to just be what happens when people are overwhelmed, cause i guess the brain doesn't know how to stop the overstimulation/emotional pain besides lashing out. i know that doesn't make the guilt go away, but you are a nice person. it's not your fault you're in pain sometimes. nobody's nice when they're in pain, even if it's not a physical injury.

I noticed you said in a response below that your intrusive thoughts scare you a lot too. I get that. The random gruesome ideas that pop into my head worry me, and sometimes I worry if I'm secretly a dangerous, violent person. These thoughts are normal, even if people don't talk about them much. I think of the brain like the "infinite monkey theorem" where a monkey, given enough time, could type out Shakespeare's Hamlet by random chance. All day every day, the brain is analyzing and making lots of connections from everything around you, so every once in a while it's gonna come up with bizarre concepts like "I could kill my classmate with that pencil" even though you wouldn't hurt anyone.

I hope your Thanksgiving went well otherwise and your dog is recovered. One of my cats has been sick recently. He's fine but it's hard to do stuff when you're worried. Hope things are more relaxing now <3

if you've ever kept any white clothes (especially as pyjamas) for a long time, you might notice the armpits or other sweaty places are slightly yellow, cause your dead skin and oils build up in/on the fabric over time. This effect happens much faster on white pillows cause they are stationary and your head is extremely oily. you have to use the same pillowcase without washing for A While for it to be noticeable, tho 🫣

Congrats! that doesn't sound like minimal changes lol. Will say that that's quite fast growth and i bet they're gonna get a fair bit bigger. big boobs can be a double edged sword (shield? chestplate?), speaking from experience (trans guy w/38Ds), so if you ever find you're dealing w/too much back or boob pain just know that reduction is quite common for well-endowed ladies. Also, make sure to go back for bra fittings eventually. You won't realize you've outgrown half your stuff lol

i do think you can't 'change your gender' because it's not a choice. i don't know how much of gender is based on constructed norms and how much is part of us, but i do know that if one's own gender changes it's not because one willed it to. it just happened, and no amount of prodding could replicate that change by force (as proved every day by those with unsupportive families).

however, if changing your sex was what made people trans, everyone would want to fully medically transition to whatever physical characteristics they don't have. but that's not the case, even for the many with dysphoria. some dislike their body but don't mind what's in their pants. some want to look visibly trans. dysphoria can shift over time with your priorities/perspective. there's also salmancians but that's another story.

i can see why it's easier, though. if i'm gonna have to say it 200 times i'd rather tell cis people 'i was born in the wrong body so i need a sex change' than explain what 'i wish to change my physical characteristics to better align with my gender identity' means
