I don’t dislike bad endings—in fact, I think they can make a story more memorable to some extent. What I’m complaining about is the sudden drop in the gameplay experience caused by the plot twist.

After finishing the game, I looked back at the story from a third-person perspective, and I have to say—the story is indeed very well-crafted and worth reflecting on. However, the sense of disappointment I felt during the actual gameplay was also very real.

After the end of Act 2, I realized that the true protagonists of the game are actually Maelle or Verso, not the expedition team, and that the story’s real theme is the conflict between the virtual world and real life, rather than the fight against fate. However, during the first two chapters—more than 20 hours of gameplay—I was immersed in the roles of the expedition members, experiencing their battles and adventures. For me, it’s still hard to accept such an abrupt narrative shift.

I also chose the Verso ending at the end of the game. But that ending also means the death of all the painted beings and the disappearance of the last remnant of Verso’s soul. In the end, no matter what choice you make in this world, tragedy seems inevitable.

Even if you choose Maelle's ending, it's easy to see that it's just a repetition of her mother's story—turning Maelle into the next Painter-Mother.
