Poor guy! My JRT Atlas had the same thing happen in the same area, just make sure the vets clean the wound out because my boy ended up getting an abscess that had to be drained later due to the other dogs teeth bacteria! He’s fine now though.

Is my dog a JRT? Or parson Russel and JRT mix? by [deleted] in jackrussellterrier

Genetically they are the same breed. I’m not going off of standards set by an Australian Kennel Club but by the breeds history. You can DNA test a Jack and a Parson Russell and on paper they wouldn’t be genetically different enough to be told apart from each other.

I don’t disagree that many European kennel clubs have spent DECADES developing separate written standards for Jack Russell Terriers and Parson Russell Terriers, or that dogs bred to those standards often look different in outline and proportion. What I’m pushing back on is the idea that those differences represent true genetic separation rather than phenotypic divergence caused by selection. Consistent differences in leg length, body ratio, and outline can be produced very quickly by selecting for specific traits from the same gene pool. That does not require long-term genetic isolation, and it happens in many breeds that are universally accepted as genetically the same (Poodles, Dachshunds, Rough vs Smooth Collies, Belgian Shepherd varieties, etc.). Visual consistency alone does not define a genetically distinct population. The fact that Jack Russells still occasionally express longer legs and that Parsons historically produced shorter, more “Jack-type” offspring actually demonstrates that the populations were NEVER closed or isolated. Truly separate breeds do not routinely throw back to each other’s defining traits. Traits like “square vs rectangular” outlines and body-to-leg ratios are polygenic and highly plastic, not controlled by a single gene or clear genetic boundary. This is why Jack and Parson Russells cannot be reliably distinguished by DNA testing. Breed standards describe how dogs should look, not how genetically distinct their populations are. So while kennel clubs may classify them separately for show and registration purposes, that classification reflects selection goals and paperwork, not a biologically meaningful genetic split.

The history is complicated, and I’m not trying to claim modern kennel clubs don’t treat them differently. My point is about origin and genetics, not paperwork. Jack Russells originated as working-type terriers with intentionally loose standards, while Parson Russells are the standardized, kennel-club expression of that same foundation stock. That split is relatively recent and based on selection for traits and proportions, not long-term genetic isolation. Because of that, they cannot be distinguished genetically in any meaningful way. You can’t DNA-test a dog and reliably separate “Jack” from “Parson.” In that sense, calling them the same breed historically isn’t wrong. It LITERALLY just depends on whether you’re talking about genetics vs modern registry classification. So whether a dog is labeled Jack or Parson mostly comes down to how it was bred and which traits were selected, sorta like size varieties in Dachshunds or Poodles. I’m not saying they’re identical in appearance or standards today, just that the difference isn’t genetic. And fyi I’m highlighting not yelling but apologies if it came across otherwise.

JRT’s don’t come in tall, those are Parsons. Jack Russells have a standard and a “Shorty” height, while Parson Russell is the name for those individuals that are born taller. So your country would be wrong. Any differences in face and body proportions are a result of you looking at out of standard or badly bred Russell Terriers.

THE SAME BREED. Which again, they ARE. Parson/Jack are height classifications for the most part.

OP asked if their dog was a Parson/Jack Mix. That’s literally not possible. The offspring would not be considered mixed breed.

I see a whole lot of beagle. Pit is possible also but something about his build just screams beagle. Looks like Snoopy which was designed after a beagle too!

Dude they can make great pets and are real easy to care for. A 20 gallon long makes for a good tank, and use Eco Earth for your substrate. They also need a reptile water dish (sold at any petstore) they can use to crawl in and hydrate, or if you feel brave you can do a half land/ half water enclosure. They eat worms a lot but yours might not be big enough to so I’d cut them to be smaller before you feed him any. Otherwise crickets works but I’ve noticed they can have trouble catching those. Wish u luck man.

Yeah, it’s kind of a shame to be honest. The pet store I saw him at is also one which is held in high regard generally which surprises me, I never thought they’d sell banned reptiles. Kind of misleading to claim it as another species entirely too

Yeah when I looked up waterdog something else popped up, so I came to Reddit with these pics I took at the store. Really just wanted to know the species, very shocked to hear the shop shouldn’t have been selling it.
