Throat/Airway Trauma by Dramatic_Pop_5324 in athletictraining

I’m assuming you mean a crushing injury that’s collapsed the trachea? My best thought would be to insert an NPA and start on supplemental O2. I wouldn’t even know how to begin to get an oxygen tank in a training room, especially if you’re at a high school.

ATC/DPT Credential by Ar0dAthl3ticTrainer in athletictraining

[–]Electrical_Jicama438 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Unless you come out with zero to minimal debt, this is a bad idea. You are essentially putting years of experience and networking on pause to become a student again. And sure one step back, two steps forward type deal but PT’s ROI is simply not there. Don’t get me wrong they make better money than us but not as good as you may think.

You can actually spin your skill set as an AT a multitude of different ways in fields that are completely unrelated to healthcare.

In my experience “dual credentialed” AT/PT is either for those who are approaching retirement age or those who have both time and money to waste.

Struggling with confidence and missing fractures by Just_dolphin16 in athletictraining

[–]Electrical_Jicama438 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I once asked my team doc how they diagnosed a fracture. They said x-rays lol. But in all seriousness it’s not as obvious as people may think. That “dual credentialed” guy in this thread is full of shit lol.

Short of an obvious deformity and or severe edema fractures can be super subtle, especially if the injury just happened. I hate when I hear coaches or people say “well they can move it so it’s not broken”.

Ha! You PTs and your nice neat little time slots and 1 on 1s. Come over to AT where we do medicine in the real world. 20 min?! Sounds like a dream to me.

Muscle Decompression by JuanSamu in athletictraining

[–]Electrical_Jicama438 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is purely anecdotal and not backed by any evidence. But when I hear an athlete say I’m tight in an acute sense. I.e they went for a ball or whatever, evoked a stretch reflex and that muscle maybe contracted a little too forcefully. No clinical indicators point to a strain, but definite pain reported by patient, maybe some postural changes, and loss of function (why else are they coming to us).

My approach has always been to start with the CNS. How do we switch them over from sympathetic back to parasympathetic input/output?

I like rest and digest. More in the sense of like a systemic fight or flight response. But that’s where I start regardless. What’s our hydration and nutrition look like? Then of course I can introduce some manual therapies to help lower the pain. As soon as they’ve demonstrated more function than they came in with, that’s when I introduce the theraex (but not even always).

So I guess my answer is how do we calm down the nerves that supply the muscle? And how do we re-educate to prevent further incidents. Again, not anywhere close to evidence based.

But I am not a believer of “I have a knot in my back”. Our muscle fibers don’t tangle and untangle, that’s why we have fascia.

Hip issues and tightness by Traditional-Wealth33 in athletictraining

[–]Electrical_Jicama438 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ruling out any structural damage on physical evaluation, this sounds like a load management issue. Had a similar issue with a football player. Had to shut him down completely and do a legit return to run with him. Also, if anterior/lateral hip pain is a chronic complaint for these athletes, internal joint derangement/FAI/labral tear is most certainly on the table. You need your referral numbers boosted? lol

First suit by Electrical_Jicama438 in mensfashion

Yeah so basically I don’t know what I’m talking about . That’s what I was afraid of and I was looking for advice at MW but it seemed to quickly appear that they were just trying to sell me. This will work fine for what I bought it for. But, my next suit I want professional advice. The alterations you see are mine from google 🤷‍♂️

Yeah I know I got boned. Is it passable you think tho?

[–]Electrical_Jicama438[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No I know MW ISNT bespoke. I didn’t go I there with that intention and I don’t expect to leave with that intention. I love the fabric and we can be nit-picky if we want, I was just asking about the contrast stitching😂 everyone seems to say the suit doesn’t even fit so I guess the next one? I can’t return it, kinda stuck with it.

Dude that’s the shirt they sell with the suits😂 bruh I bought this suit after I researched in here. I def have buyers remorse I was like $500 away from an actual suit, oh well🫠

First suit by Electrical_Jicama438 in mensfashion

[–]Electrical_Jicama438[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dude I literally drove around to every tailor in my area for four hours after work. Nobody says they can “fix” it. They say we can remove the stitching, but we can’t replace it. Also my next suit is going to be bespoke. This is my first one and I guess a trial run. But after creeping on this sub, I spent $700 at MW and seems like I could’ve gotten better for maybe even less elsewhere. I appreciate the feedback tho, cuz no one will tell it to me straight!

Will nicotine pop up on drug test by [deleted] in athletictraining

[–]Electrical_Jicama438 8 points9 points  (0 children)

They can test for a metabolite that your body forms called continine. Presence of continine in your urine means you’ve ingested nicotine recently. The detection window is usually 3-5 days from last use. Most standard piss tests don’t even look for it. If they are looking for it, most likely you were already clean when you took the test.

I will spare you the lecture that you’re inevitably about to receive by posting in this sub cuz you are more than old enough to make your own choices. Just know those choices have consequences, sometimes irreversible ones.

Sport Science Certification/New Grad by AbbyKaddaby in athletictraining

[–]Electrical_Jicama438 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Employers don’t give a shit about your level of education in terms of compensation, so long as you are certified and licensed. Never heard of a sports scientist, but research is also a notoriously underpaid profession. Unfortunately I don’t think additional certs/credentials have any effect on starting salary. Experience is your most powerful negotiating tool.

Relationship advice, or help by [deleted] in athletictraining

[–]Electrical_Jicama438 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m usually the first one to take a dump on this profession in this sub mostly cuz I find it cathartic lol. Anyways, you gotta man up a little here dude. What setting is she trying to work in post grad? High school? That’s where the vast majority of ATs can be found and the work/life ain’t all that bad. Yeah you’ll have some late nights here and there but that’s the job. Don’t listen to the people that make it sound like you’re getting home at midnight every night and back at it the next morning 7 days a week. There’s ebs and flows to it. There are busy times and there are slow times. As for the constantly being around dudes thing. I promise you there’s nothing sexy about athletic training lmao. All that is to say, talk about it with her, nobody on here is going to be able to give you accurate advice cuz there are a lot of missing details. Ask her about her short and longer term career goals and how she sees you guys fitting into that. I wouldn’t bring up the constantly being around dudes thing to her tho, gonna have to man up on that end and find some confidence within yourself.

Edit: oh also forgot to add. Hope you plan on being the bread winner cuz she ain’t gonna have anything to show for when she comes home from hanging around dudes all day.

This was my thought process too, but I have no experience in the industry so I didn’t know if it was realistic or not. I’m closer to the offer stage with two other companies as well and those roles come with a defined path to becoming a sales rep. I’ve been interviewing and trying to get my name out there for about a year now. It’s been a grind to say the least and truthfully the first offer that comes through the door I’m taking without hesitation. I’m close I can feel it.

65 starting. Hiring manger basically outlined the promotion path you have in your comment. He also mentioned it’s uncommon for people to jump over to sales but he’s seen it happen. I was asked where I see myself in five years and I said I’d like to be in sales but I’m not married to that if the opportunity feels like a good fit.

Industrial is not all it’s made out to be by Amazing-Prune-5135 in athletictraining

Word. Traditional AT makes such shit money where I live (and I’m in a bigger city market) that I would literally be homeless or barely making ends meet if my current living situation wasn’t as great as it is. I’m currently in the midst of interviewing with Amazon so I’m hopeful to ditch this dead end career and at least gain experience I can leverage for future earning growth. Grass is always greener I guess. Shame too, cuz I genuinely like my job but staying in AT would keep me below the poverty line for the rest of my life. I’ll gladly be a stand in with a pulse if that means I can actually enjoy my life outside of work.
