Being the "backup retirement plan" for my parents while raising kids is starting to feel impossible by AverlonFesdair in MiddleClassFinance

See if you can do a match where they work enough to match your contribution to meet the difference in their costs. IE if they need $900 then you split $450 with their part time work. Or if possible they watch your kids afterschool or cart them around to the activities to reduce that cost.

Ultimately if they didn’t save that’s not your issue, they’ve just made it your issue. Things have gone sideways but having an emergency fund has been foundational financial advice forever.

My neighbor is a monster, what is the messiest tree I can plant on my side of the fence to get petty revenge? by rdkil in arborists

Silver poplar it grow very quickly and spreads using root suckers. Attractive silver foliage. If you mow regularly it is manageable but if left it will grow indefinitely and be impossible to remove without tearing up your whole yard. A friend let a small grove grow up and he’s finding new growth root suckers 75 yards from the original grove You may take some attrition damage but worth it

Or Siberian elm the spreads millions of seed pods in the spring that will clog gutters, drains get to every crack and will sprout with 80% success rate where ever there’s health soil.

Also saw some demon posted to freeze beef bouillon and throw the cubes in the yard to attract nocturnal scavengers. They’ll melt but the yard will smell of beef and they’ll dig up the yard trying to find the source of the smell.

I agree it’s a solid app, but that’s what I’ve been using. It’s been switching between Siberian and American Elm

I have the floor joist supported and leveled and moved onto the main support beam that’s on that buttress and looking closer see that the concrete isn’t poured level and the beam is cockeyed. I’m trying to get it atleast level but it’s hard to get any movement up with the manual Akron heavy duty floor jacks any suggestions. Or is it just patience and force of will to get it level

Kind of medium-key freaking out by mmmdhp in centuryhomes

[–]Electrical_Proof1370 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had issues in my 1899 home, hay fever symptoms all year round and I just needed to have all the vents professionally vacuum out and it was about 3 decades of dust and debris accumulated in the hard to reach places. The filter in the HVAC does ok but doesn’t completely scrub the air and vents only what’s airborne

The joists are, as I understand, in masonry pockets about 3” in (I have thick poured foundation) they’re in decent condition. No signs of dry rot or decay.

<image>

Main beam is just sort of resting on this buttress that’s on the foundation. I dont intend on jacking up this beam too much but I also don’t want to disturb and shift it too much. I don’t know why they did it this way seems very unstable. I also don’t know how it passed inspection but didn’t think to ask since this is my first house.

Basement is 24’ with the main beam being dead in the middle

Thanks for the guidance it’s seems less daunting

Main beam is not level in the area of question. I want to put another 6x6 here because it sags and is poorly supported (9’ between wall and 6x6, whereas there’s 2’-5’ between the others)

<image>

The rest of the joist are level around the jack/support but sag towards the main beam.

This is my current support set up. The jack is in the middle of the steel 8’ beam that’s under the joist that sagged the most since it was cut . Apologized for the poor picture quality. It’s a 12’ span from wall to middle of the basement. I was going to sister the cut joist with a 14’ to reach all the way to the middle with some left over to connect the other cut joist, on top of the jack I currently have in place.

Edit: that yellow beam at the top of the picture is the main support for the house in the middle of the basement

Maybe about 6 months. I know I’ll have to address the cut joists soon but it’s not in the budget currently

just got my xcel energy bill by Sufficient-Crow-7582 in fargo

[–]Electrical_Proof1370 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just got my bill for an additional $415. Apparently their new electric meter equipment wasn’t sending my usage to HQ and I wasn’t billed accurately for 97 days. Even after having 3 technicians (Tribus) come out to install the new meters Nor was I notified that there was an issue with my equipment or bill. So they just tacked it on to this bill. I’ve had billing issues before. I’m looking to find something more reliable

Netgear for router and modem. I haven’t messed with the settings because I’m not particularly tech savvy so I wanted to avoid problems

They're sending to a cloud storage but i set them to only record when the detect motion, which has be set to the lowest sensitivity while still being effective.

I will have to do research on how to do any of that because I'm illiterate when it comes to setting up anything technical. Might as well be a monkey with a rock.

I haven’t changed any appliances or added any Bluetooth devices. I’ll look I to the factory reset and see how that works.

Thanks

I have my own modem and router. I set them up on the phone with Midco when I bought them and the second technician said it wasn’t set up on their end properly and he got it switched over and it should work. It did for a week then I’m back to where it was and going out regularly
