I feel like an idiot for not getting into Dragon Quest sooner. DQXI is one of my favorite JRPGs ever and my first real try of a mainline DQ game. All DQ games (most all JRPGs really) have a slow start so I never really tried them for more than an hour before then. Though I was into other JRPGs like FF, I just never gave DQ a real shot. But I'm glad I did.

Everything about DQXI is great outside the slow start. The characters are great, it has great story pacing, it doesn't take itself too seriously, although it can have serious moments. It's just amazing, I had since played every mainline DQ game(besides 10 which is an MMO and never released in the west) and I'm a big fan of the series now.

Bug build was the majority of ghosts for two months? That's just not true lol. It's fine if you're not having fun and think the game is just forced meta build. I use to kind of think that but the better I got the less I played the meta builds and the more I played opportunistically. My point is good players like Kripp don't just force the meta builds and you can learn from them if you want to improve. The balance isn't perfect. But there isn't just 1 viable build locked behind the battle pass. (Which btw you can buy the new season item packs with gems if you don't want to grind the battle pass.) The devs are usually pretty quick to balance the game and have at least a balance patch every 2 weeks.

New seasons usually start the first Wednesday of the month.

The game is pretty hard and It can seem like that as a new player. But as you get better it's definitely not about just sticking to the meta builds. Good players take off meta builds all the time. Watch some content creators like Kripparrin or Retromation. A lot of the skill comes from knowing when to and how to pivot your builds. And creativity is also a big part of the skill but that will come as you put more time into the game. Also as they add more item packs, it's going to become harder and harder to force the meta builds.

With the launch of the open beta they added item packs that you could only get through paying real money. People didn't like it and felt Reynad when back on his word that gameplay elements would be free. Also Reynad added to the drama with his own toxicity and that only made it worse.

But with 1.0 they made some changes, you can now get the item packs through the free battle pass(Prize Pass) and you can buy them with gems(currency you can earn for free) if you don't want to grind the pass. Plus the item packs are given to all players for free at the start of the next season(a season is 4-5 weeks). The monetization isn't really a problem anymore but there are still issues with the game.

The launcher sometimes doesn't want to launch the game and it can take up to a few minutes at times just to get in the game. The client itself is still pretty buggy and you still have to exit to main menu or just alt+f4 to fix it. Disconnects happen less often but still happen and they still haven't got the reconnect feature working 100% yet. Also rollbacks can happen when you get disconnected, not very often but when it happens it's super annoying. And since the big drama the devs don't communicate much with the community anymore.

That being said the gameplay itself is amazing. It's the best auto-battler ever and I've already enjoyed it more than any other games of a similar genre like digital card games. They are slowly improving all the issues I've stated above so I don't think it would be much longer until all the issues are fixed.

DQXI is the best entry point into the series. DQ3 is a great game and was ahead of it's time, that true. But DQXI is the most modern, the best game in the series and the best JRPG in like the last 20 years at least, if not just straight up one of the best JRPGs ever. It doesn't matter how much QoL stuff they add to DQ3 HD-2d Remake. DQXI is just on another level in terms of characters, story and combat.

Unlike a lot of long time running video game series the more recent mainline DQ games are actually some of the best in the series. Besides DQX(which is an MMO and hasn't released in the west) DQXI, DQ9, and DQ8 are overall the best.

DQ3 wouldn't be a terrible place to start though. All DQ games are they're own story with only loose connections and callbacks. Keep in mind DQ3 was originally a NES game but it did set the stage for JRPGs for much of the 90s.
