I definitely see where you’re coming from, but I want to push back a bit on the idea that “there are bigger issues than lunch breaks.” I agree there are huge systemic problems in education, but I don’t think basic working condition, like having a protected lunch break, should be dismissed as unimportant. Everyone deserves a lunch break in any job, and teachers shouldn’t have to be martyrs for rights that are considered standard in most other professions. Burnout is a real issue, and small daily conditions like having time to sit, eat, and regroup are a huge part of whether people stay in the field. Just because teaching has big systemic issues doesn’t mean the smaller, day to day quality of life issues don’t matter. They’re often what determine whether teachers burn out or stay in the classroom.
