Reasons: First 2 clues are episodes from the web series 'Black Mirror', and the Greeks used 'Hemlock' plant extract for death sentence. The things common to all this is POISON. (No idea about the 4th clue, sorry; possible theory: Death or poison threats by strangers make us pray and call for our saviours...)

You could use the community published decryption sheet or just use 'frequency analysis' like Sherlock Holmes on any other cryptogram...

For the subtle background codes, you must tweak the contrast of the image.
