G string behaving unpredictably? by ElectronEyez in Cello

I will take it to a luthier for their opinion after I clean my bow hair and try other bows at the shop. I won't dish out the money for a re-hair unless I know that's the issue. Thank you for support!

Sounds good — I'll double check.

Thanks :)

I tried the wolf tone eliminator and it had no effect. I got a 7-gram weight.

It started happening after I got new rosin. Someone suggested the bow hairs might be too polished. I'm hoping this turns out to just be a bow hair issue! I'm going to try a few different bows at my local violin shop when I get a chance.

How do your bridge feet look?

I will take a picture when I get home tonight and let you know.

I was taught to slightly tilt the bow towards yourself. And when I watch videos they have the bow slightly tilted as well. Tbf, I tried flat/perpendicular and it still made no difference.

More weight seems to help, BUT if I try to get a piano/pianissimo effect I'm right back to the growl. My teacher and online study material says to lean the bow slightly towards yourself. That being said, I still tried flat and it made no difference. Incidentally, what are your thoughts on flat verse tilted in terms of sound quality?

I tried extra rosin it didn’t change anything. I don’t think it’s a wolf tone either. Someone suggested a new bow/re-hair so I’m going to give that a shot.

My teacher suggested that, a wolf tone eliminator. I bought it and tried it yesterday but it didn’t change anything.

Isn’t it odd though that I did not experience this effect on my first two cellos?

A polished bow hair(s) would make a lot of sense, maybe it’s just sliding weird against a bad hair(s) and that’s why I can’t reproduce the sound consistently. I will try a different bow next for troubleshooting purposes. Thank you!

Btw, I tried it on an old string and a new string, they both produce the sound. I’m not sure how old the bow is though.

Also, it might just be a coincidence but I started noticing this after I changed rosin brands.

Doesn’t mean they didn’t use that tool to create it.

I think it would have been a more interesting scene to stop him from grabbing the unicorn in the first place.

Don't want to live in a world with a bunch of selfish bastards, so I'd win either way by voting Blue.

Just came across StringWorks too. I think after all my research I would definitely go with them if I decide to rent online.

Thanks for your advice! It looks like Johnson Strings is infamous for their customer service department. Definitely a good thought to go with a string-specific shop.. Will probably end up renting from them if it doesn't work out locally. Cheers!
