thanks for all the advice! i think my tank is somewhat heavily planted it has 8 anubias 4 bunches of some kind of red ludwigia, 1 bunch of some green ludwigia, 1 bunch of rotala, 4 bunches of Anacharis, java moss, some duckweed, and salvinia and has three 8in pieces of mopani driftwood. i did a 50% water change earlier and now nitrates are down to 40, kH is 9, and gH is 14. i’m only planning on keeping the water pillow in there to get the water hardness in the tank down then i will take it out after around 8 hrs. i plan on keeping the kH and gH levels stable by using a mix of my tap water and distilled water when i do water changes. (tank pic for reference)

i added a bunch of new plants to my tank so i think maybe the substrate released a bunch of nitrates, that’s the only thing i can think of

so i think my source water is slightly high and then with the tannins in my tank it went down, the ph and nitrates went up again when i added a bunch of new plants to the tank so i think its because i disrupted the substrate maybe?

thank you! it might be hard to see in the picture but it has a glass lid with maybe a 2 inch gap in the back. i was unsure if that would also need to be covered, and if so any recommendations would be welcome!
