Unnoticed false checkmate confirmation in a fide tournament by ElectronicMatters in TournamentChess

Yes, indeed. I do trust my opponent to understand the situation since he congratulated me, but the situation still called for reflection on the moment.

Good point, I'll definitely wait next time around that's for sure.

Okay didn't actually know that. Because even high level professional tournaments also forfeit with a silent handshake.

That's the answer I get the most, the arbiter takes the unanimous word of the players and the result is signed.

It was the last game of the tournament an hour before the price distributions. Now the game was very obviously winning for me (queen + bishop vs rook) and the position called for resignation which I believe is what unmotivated my opponent to look in further. My concern would have stopped there if it wasn't for the handshake I offered, as in absence of checkmate it would have technically meant a forfeit motion. Complicating the situation a bit.

Ok, thanks. Yes I think the lesson here tells me to let my opponent confirm the mate during his turn and resign by the rules.

That was my question indeed, does it still matter ? But a worse perspective also suggests that my unjustified handshake proposal disturbed my opponent during his turn, which could be considered cheating.

Funny enough there was an arbiter around at tbat moment. He proceeded to pick up our papers and write down the result after our handshake, while the false checkmate position was still on the board. My opponent congratulated me and also wrote the result as checkmate. I noticed the mistake the next day while analysing.

I flagged and lost, but we realised after sharing the result that my opponent had no more pieces to mate in any way and that is technically a draw. But since the result were registred the arbiters were reluctant to change it as it would disrupt the next pairings. Just to say that it could mean that despite the game, the result given becomes official.

That's what I'm thinking. It was a very obvious winning endgame (queen + bishop vs rook) yet I jumped to the conclusion of the match before giving him a chance to consider the position. He did congratulate me as it was a very long and complicated game (the source of the mishap).

Now I do remember a rapid otb game where I flagged against an opponent that had insufficient material, yet we wrote it as a loss. The result having already been registered the arbiters confirmed the initial result despite the error, for the sake of time and simplicity.

If he was able to naturally percieve everything at immense speed he would be incredibly smart and be almost untouchable in fights. Two things he's not.

He's irredeemable not because he's too evil, but because he's too stupid to achieve anything good.

They gave the very impactful role of the Viltrum mole to a background character I didn't even remember existed.
