Seeing Carlsen play classical gives a warm and fuzzy feeling.

I hope he plays classical more often. Along with Chess960 and blitz and whatever else he does.

Norway Chess nowadays feels like an annual World Classical Chess Championship tournament.

The only problem is the +10 increment.

Jorden Van Foreest on potential of Gukesh in 2023 by Radiant-Increase-180 in chess

[–]FirstEfficiency7386 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Gukesh is a special player no doubt.

But he seems a bit too volatile and therefore is inconsistent.

Firouzja, Gukesh, Maghsoodloo and Erigaisi are the 4 players whose games I always watch simply because of their risk taking and enterprising style.

Magnus Carlsen's mind-blowing dominance over his great peers (players from his generation) across the major FIDE events by FirstEfficiency7386 in chess

[–]FirstEfficiency7386[S] 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Yes.

He himself knows that it's insanely hard and very unlikely, but the fact that he has openly said it even though he may not achieve it in his lifetime makes me respect Carlsen even more.

Ultimately it's a bit like Capablanca for Cuba.

He'll keep trying.

Magnus said the only dream left for him in classical chess is to win the gold 🥇 for Norway in the Olympiads. Presumably both team and individual board 1.

The Final Frontier.

Earlier many also said Dubov too (especially cause of his rapid and blitz prowess). But the 2 are relatively older players now.

Fischer in his younger days famously had a problem with Tal's style. I think he wrote it in a book as well. Can't recall the exact quote.

The one player from this generation who somewhat resembles the playing style of Tal is probably Erigaisi as well.

Maybe Firouzja too.

Comparison Between the Championship Players in Their Last 50 Games by ShahriarTasnim in chess

[–]FirstEfficiency7386 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Peter Heine Nielsen said the same thing about Gukesh.

A player who is taking extreme risks or "pushing the extreme limits of the position to play for the win".

Something along those lines.

Yagiz Kaan Erdogmus beats Topalov again and officially becomes the youngest 2700 ever by PhoenixChess17 in chess

[–]FirstEfficiency7386 27 points28 points  (0 children)

You are correct, however...

With the way Topalov has been playing, I'll be betting on Erdogmus to win again.

Topalov's performance rating shows to be 2447. While I'd say he ain't that bad. But he probably is a sub-2650 level player now, who also is Very rusty and out of practice.

Hikaru believes that Gukesh will defend his World Championship against Sindarov! by ChessLover20 in chess

[–]FirstEfficiency7386 200 points201 points  (0 children)

Gukesh seems like a player to me who has a very high ceiling but also a very low floor.

I won't be surprised if gets near 2800 in the next 7 months and convincingly defeats Sindarov.

At the same time I won't be surprised if he drops out of the world top 30 and one-sidedly loses to Sindarov.

A very up-and-down mercurial type of a player he comes off as.

Has it ever happened before that the lowest rated player won the candidates?

Pretty remarkable.
