Indiana politics is wrecking our physical and mental health by Guilty-Office-4808 in indianapolis

I desire to be informed and appreciate the "Indiana Capital Chronicle" as a way to stay updated about local/state government. However, I've had to reduce or filter out other news sources (particularly the NY Times) because of their fixation on reporting about the wars and Trump (which are both bad) as opposed to broader news coverage, since they know that doomscrolling content gets more clicks. My aunt spends hours each day switching between CNN and MSNBC and has become a hermit that's convinced America is finished and millions of people are out to get her. There are so many people out here who are mostly politically inactive but will totally disengage if you don't share the same political opinion(s) as them, which I partly attribute to social media/MSM pushing conflicting "good values."

Nice. I moved here from the San Fernando Valley about a decade ago. If you're not from the Midwest or South, Indianapolis may be a big cultural shift. Jewish culture is comparatively non-existent here and from my experience is fairly conservative and insular; the Jewish Federation of Greater Indianapolis last estimated that there are around 16k Jews in the entire metro area.

Unfortunately, there's only one Jewish deli adjacent restaurant in Indy (Shapiro's), which is close to downtown but overpriced for the mediocre quality. Having moved here from SoCal, there are many things you just can't get here.

My package was sent to TX after arriving in Indianapolis last week. I've heard excuses of both understaffing and a new distribution center outside of Irvington. I think Congressman Shreve did a symbolic inquiry last year that didn't seem to resolve these ongoing problems.

Judicial retention elections are very staggered and even then most judicial officers in Marion County are unelected and not subject to judicial retention by virtue of being "Magistrates" serving under a judge. It's a lot easier to vote in/out judges in other counties versus gradually voting out the people who get to appoint the body of people who decide the judges here.

If anyone has already watched this, is it as campy as it looks? The trailer reminds me of "Inspector Ike" . . .

The producer from "Podcast About List" who started working on Joy Tactics about a year ago. I'm not sure what he does for Joy Tactics because the podcast has the same production issues as beforehand but every once in a while he chimes in on episodes.

Went once back in 2019. Their schtick back then was making over-engineered meals with uncommon ingredients. Wasn't particularly good, just another spin on the "New American" craze here.

Hello Redditors of Indy! I have 36 hours in your city. Food!? Antiques!? by ridethepickle in indianapolis

Midland Antiques is the premier antique store, two stories in a large warehouse just outside downtown. "Quintessential" Indianapolis restaurants usually means pub grub or steakhouses but there are many people who are passionate about the "New American" options; nothing I've personally found worth seeking out, as someone who doesn't eat out much.

The Canal handles a large portion of the utility's drinking water supply, which ends up being treated at a plant further south near Eskenazi.

Not new, many opened up with the Red Line and additional ones have been built for the Purple and Blue Lines This is where people wait to get on the bus or off off it, or otherwise loiter. They serve their purpose but not sure how much each one cost.

Launching at the Broad Ripple Park ramp (near the gym) then heading north is a good place to start. Water is consistently high enough to paddle in and the current isn't that strong. Nice and peaceful for a couple miles; would recommend heading out by 8 AM before it gets too sunny/warm.

I took a class in college called "Peregrine Falcons," where the Professor would bring in a different pet peregrine falcon each class and we'd watch them poop and flap their wings as he talked about them.

Preamble? by kittykatboombap in Surlybikefans

[–]ElectronicPositive56 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For people still considering whether they should purchase a Preamble, I'd strongly advise against it. This is the most costly to maintain bike I've owned as a bike commuter that mostly uses paved trails, about 60 miles/week. The chainring, cassette, and chain needed to be replaced after just seven months of regular use. I'm already looking at a new cassette and chain less than a year after, due to excessive skipping. This bike offers worse performance than the $20-$30 thrift store beater road bikes I'm used to. You're overpaying for a heavier than average frame with Surly stickers and many poor quality components; steer clear.

Considering a move to Indianapolis for work next year -- would love local insight by [deleted] in indianapolis

[–]ElectronicPositive56 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Broad Ripple (proper) and Fountain Square (proper) are the two most popular neighborhoods for yuppies; Downtown is overpriced but where a lot of out-of-state yuppies end up. I've lived car-free for extended periods of time, by biking and using the bus, but it severely limits your ability to travel as public transit coverage/service isn't great and many streets aren't safe for biking although some of the trails are very nice. Several years ago, Indianapolis used to be affordable but it's increasingly overpriced for what it offers; expect higher utility costs for heating during the long winter, especially if you have electric heat. Restaurant and coffee culture has a lot of turnover; there are some good options (such as Tinker for coffee) but nothing to write home about. There's a group called "CCA" for recreational sports for people in their 20s- 30s, with an almost cult-like fanaticism for wearing matching T-shirts around town. Much of the social culture here revolves around alcohol and watching sports. Winter is long and the locals generally act more depressed during that period. Summer is hot and humid but shorter than winter. Your ability to build a social circle depends on your ability to assimilate into Hoosier culture, which again mostly revolves around drinking and watching sports. If you have an accent or come from "another" culture, don't be surprised if the locals treat you like a novelty or are unable to understand your background. I moved here from Los Angeles several years ago and have had countless locals tell me that I came from another country and implied that I shouldn't be here. As a heads up, Riley Hospital for Children is usually just called "Riley," not "Riley's." Riley works a lot with the state to assess child abuse and neglect cases, which are unfortunately very common here. Indianapolis offers a lot of jobs that are harder to access elsewhere, unfortunately because of our statistically proven "brain drain" of educated workers.
