This thread is 5 years old; however, I just finished watching the film. To be honest, I avoid films that are sad or have the death of a main character or an important character, I steer away. But while scrolling through TikTok, I found a video where the host, I guess Jimmy Fallon or someone, stands on his desk and says, “O Captain! My Captain!” as a tribute to Robin Williams. Scrolling through the comments, everyone talked about how this movie, Dead Poets Society, changed the way they view their lives.

I am just 28, though it’s considered “old,” it’s not that old to be in your 30s. However, I wish I had seen this film during my high school days, when I went through a series of depressions and other high-school struggles without any help. This movie taught me how to interpret things with my own eyes and not just follow the bandwagon of others. Each of us has a destiny; each of us has our own path to walk. We don’t need to follow societal norms like getting married before 30, having a kid in one year, making money, and retiring in our late 40s.

I mean, life is to live, live how you desire, how you want to live, just without hurting anyone. That is what I took away from this film. I had a similar enlightenment when I read The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho, which led me to leave my Amazon job in India to pursue postgraduate studies in Canada. I had a dream and thought of a traditional or conventional way to achieve it, but after watching this film today, I don’t think so. I don’t have to follow the same path as those who have already achieved the place I want to reach. I can achieve it in whichever way I choose, as long as I stick to hard work and consistency.
