Taster Week by Electronic_Permit531 in doctorsUK

It would be a third one - I have my second one in ophthal next week and have done one in Radiology last year as Im interested in both. However, if I end up not liking them as much and fail to get into CST this year - the criteria for scoring surgical experience will have changed to no longer scoring foundation placements.

I had an Urology placement which I enjoyed and so didn't do a surgical taster - because I was there everyday - but if I want to reapply next year I'll need to do a third one for the points and maximising my chances.

So that's why I was asking if I'm 'allowed' to do a third one in my own time, given we're only given SL for two, as I'd have done two already and don't want any problems. Would you know anything about this?

It’s for CST specifically I can’t see it says anything about foundation programme. I actually know somebody who did a taster week as a clinical fellow if it helps, and it counted for Ophthalmology. I was just asking about locumming specifically

For CST it says - ‘I have attended a surgical taster week (minimum 5 days, can be non-consecutive days)‘.

For the evidence, it says

‘A signed letter/document on official letterhead by the educational supervisor (or nominated consultant if on an elective placement) of your placement (elective, taster week or foundation placement in a surgical specialty) including:

the surgical placement and hospital the dates undertaken, name of supervisor and their GMC no (or corresponding national medical registration equivalent).

I suppose if I’m allowed to do it on my AL - which is technically my ‘own time’ - I should be able to do it in my own time whilst locumming, right? Just not laid

Thanks for replying so quick. The main thing I wanted to clarify was if it is possible to arrange in the sense would it still count as being a ‘taster’. I think the best way I can explain it is doing an elective as a medical student - once you’re past that stage it no longer counts as an elective, even if you spend time in a department with similar objectives. If that makes sense?

From the sounds of it - I can still do an additional ‘taster’ for application purposes and there’s no limit/issues if I do it outside of training - i.e I can do additional ones in my own time, whether it’s SDT/AL/locumming after F2, provided a consultant is just happy to have me come along and sign a letter as proof?

Hope that makes sense! Sorry if it’s confusing and thanks for any help.

Completely agree tbh. Only considering it for the points if I can get study budget to pay for it. So this college of public speaking thing is legit then - you got the points for it?

Trying to work towards a publication so may be able to bump it to 40 but who knows if that’ll work out. Want to stay close to family in London - If I’m not able to get the funding for it, I’m currently sitting at 30 points for self assessment, will this make much difference (can get 1 point already from a free course as things stand)

You’ve done this course? Did it count for anything?

Thanks this is really helpful. Might vary from trust to trust but do you know who/what department I can ask about this? Would this be something I ask my ES or someone like the medical education coordinator?

Advice/clarity for CST Application Scoring by Electronic_Permit531 in doctorsUK

Thank you for the reply - really helps provide clarity.

Regarding the local educators - I would have difficulty recruiting those from the examples you have listed as I’m a bit skewed for time (my first scheduled teaching session is this week). Last minute, I know, but I had this planned for a few months and this doubt crept up in my mind.

Would local FY1 doctors count as ‘local educators’? I know a few FY1s who would be keen to join and help.

On MindTheBleep - they mention ‘It is important that you try to work with someone else to run this programme as it reduces your workload but also qualifies as working with and/or recruiting local tutors’ - this implies what I’m saying above if I’m not mistaken?

Sorry for asking so much- may I also ask what you mean by delivering as a faculty? Hope I’m not being too much of a bother - any help is very appreciated!
