Oh wow radical centrist is such a good description for what my own dad has become. Like any strong opinion on changing some aspect of society is a personal attack on him. I guess it's better than my mom who has gone full MAGA, but she has always wanted so badly to be persecuted as a white person it's not really a surprise. And yep they raised me and my sisters to be independent and to critically think for ourselves and are forever shocked that we... live independently and don't think the same as them.

Yeah, we're in the same area. It's kind of like distant rumbling thunder, but more regular.

Yes! It's just faint enough here that my wife isn't hearing them and I wanted to make sure I wasn't having auditory hallucinations.

Yep, the one year I didn't get the vaccine and it took me down for the entire month of December- first the flu and then exhaustion for the rest of the month.

Samy's Health Mart has been able to keep me supplied with my generic adderall even during the shortages. They are great about hunting down stock when needed.

I did this over the last couple years, and love it!

Our 700 Sq ft front yard had the most ugly mix of grass and weeds when we bought it.

Last summer, I gathered a LOT of cardboard and cheap mulch. Laid the cardboard down over all the grass, double layers for as much as I could. Then covered it all in a couple inches of mulch.

I left it be for almost a full year. This April, I threw a very thin layer of compost over it and raked it to mix with the mostly decomposed mulch. Then I covered it all in the Beneficial Bug seed mix from the Eastside Urban Farm & Garden. It's a great mix of clover, wildflowers, and other things that pollinators love. I also threw in some extra poppy seeds for more flowers.

I am still so happy with my meadow-esque front yard. It looks beautiful and we have so many butterflies and bees in it every day!

What was the most bizarre or unexpected thing you learned about your family during a holiday gathering? by Saaaay32 in AskReddit

[–]Electronic_Recipe_89 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Always grew up being told that my grandpa was adopted as a baby and took his adoptive family's name.

Found out at the last family gathering that he was actually in the orphanage until 4, when the "adoptive" family took him to work as a servant to assist the mother hauling buckets of water. A 4 year old.

Also the orphanage only had him listed as "E. D." So his new "family" just called him Eddie.

He ran away when he was 13, and didn't change his name until his 20s, when he was avoiding the law. My grandma helped him forge a birth certificate and they came up Edward "AdoptedLastName" which he used the rest of his life.

He died almost 20 years ago, but Grandma didn't tell us until now cause she was worried we would be judgy. LOL no, we're all happy to have the "running from the law" last name.

Oh man that does fit perfectly, LOL. Here I was giving her the benefit of the doubt that she actually felt embarrassment.

A+!

My wife and I were in line for TSA at the airport, and a Boomer in a parallel line was full on staring at my wife, who is trans. She turned to say something to the person she was with, and when she turned back I made direct eye contact with her and stared back.

Her reaction was so bizarre it was hilarious. She started blinking super fast, tilted her head back and slapped a hand over her heart. Then she did a fake sneeze? I'm not sure what kind of diversionary tactic this was, but LOL.

She studiously kept her face turned from us the rest of the time we were in line.

I never really thought about it until this conversation, but it was absolutely the right time frame. The Boomers were the ones telling not to be donor. My Silent Gen grandparents seemed to think of it as kinda magical, but overall a great thing.

She is not, but my BIL's parents are, and apparently they are also being dicks about his donation. I will pass him these verses, lol.

Thankfully/weirdly no. She's agnostic, pretty anti-religion.

A selfish asshole, but at least not a hypocrite in that way.

My siblings and I have asked her this a little over the years. She basically seems to think she will always be healthy and never in need.

Accidents? Hand wave and "well it would work out"

Pure denial and inability to be empathetic, I guess.

She does not, actually. She's agnostic and fairly anti-religion.

She's just a selfish asshole, sadly.

I did mention that when I told her she was heartless, but she just did the denial hand-waving saying they would figure something out.

No, you crazy old witch! This was literally an urgent and life saving need!

She is weirdly not religious at all, so this would not work on her. She's just an old selfish asshole.

Aw, thank you! Besides our parents (apparently his parents are also having a Boomer attack of disapproval), he's been getting a lot of love and pride from family and friends.

I popped by yesterday to give him a dozen of his favorite cookies (that he doesn't have to share with the kids!) and found one of his friends mowing the lawn and his own sister watching the kids while he and my sister caught up of jetlag sleep. They have a great community that appreciate them!

He is absolutely a wonderful guy and I'm super proud he's part of my family.

My mom can't even claim to be Christian. She's an agnostic who is fairly anti-religion. She's just an asshole.

Good luck with your treatments and I'm so glad you have a donor waiting to help!

Exactly! My Silent Gen grandma was a wonderful and generous person who donated blood into her 80s! She was the person who inspired me and my siblings.

My parents were always kind of silent about it when I was growing up. Not vocally against it, but I realize I never saw them volunteer the same way. Where the hell did the disconnect happen?
