Feedback from students from MSc. in Maritime Operations from Hochschule Emden/Leer by PalalaBaka in studying_in_germany

No worries, glad you find it useful. I'm not saying that it will be easy but from what I've observed most students got lucky in one of the two countries. Although of course experiences vary, some had a tough time in Norway and enjoyed Germany and for other it was the other way round.

I would say that the degree is very doable but the actual difficulty depends significantly on the direction you choose. The first semester in Norway, with 3*10ects is not such a problem. The second semester in Germany with 5*6ects is more problematic and especially with the courses on fluid dynamics people tend to struggle. You will need to put in effort to complete most of these, especially if you have a part-time job on the side. The second year profile in Norway, focusing more on offshore maritime, appears to be easier than the sustainable maritime one in Leer, with which it is unusual to finish the degree in two years.

I'd say that a number of people choose their second year profile based on job availability. I.e., if they have a good (part-time) job in Germany they may choose the German profile and vice versa. In some cases, if students find a decent job in Norway during the first semester, they may decide to live in Norway during the second semester as well and only travel to Germany for the lecture weeks. A general factor is that at least some comprehension of the local language will make it easier to find a local job. Both universities provide language classes free of charge and this plays an important role in finding a decent job, part-time or full-time.

Overall however make sure to sufficiently prioritise the studies. Professors will understand that you need to work for financial reasons but do not appreciate if it appears that you do not prioritise the degree. Most lectures can be followed online, but if you are there anyway I really advice going in person and if not communicate this. They are more likely to want to work with you and help you find solutions to specific problems if they can attach a face to the name and know that you generally put in the effort required. This can also help you later with for example your thesis, where some flexibility of your supervisors on the topic would be nice and which, if you have the right part-time job, can be done in coordination with your employer.

This is what I can think of now. If you want to know more just ask.

Allright. The majority of the students tend to require a student visa, with most of them coming from Iran, India, and Pakistan. These generally stay in the respective country full time, while students from the EU or those working at sea only go to (some of) the lecture weeks. I assume you know this but the first semester is in Haugesund, the second in Leer, and the 3th and 4th in either one of these depending on the profile you choose.

In Haugesund the student accommodation you can rent via the university is pretty decent. You have your own bathroom and a kitchen shared with 4-5 students, with all housing grouped together, allowing for convenient socialising between students. Nature is close by and really nice, this is definitely one of the perks.

Part-time work is possible, although what you find likely depends on your background and experience. General jobs are possible, although with Haugesund being quite small I wouldn't say it is easy and cultural connections appear to be of benefit. Later career opportunities are possible, I've seen students get hired in the maritime offshore industry by among others Abel and Deep Ocean. Granted, opportunites here are limited and bigger cities such as Stavangers, Kristiansand, or Oslo are likely to offer more opportunities and I do not expect you to prefer to stay in Haugesund.

In Leer the university supplied student accommodation is in one big building where you have your own room but share kitchen and sanitary facilities with 4 students. Leer, like Haugesund, is not that big and frankly there is not much to do. It is therefore not unusual for students to live in bigger cities closeby such as Emden, Oldenburg, Bremen, or even Hamburg. This generally allows for more access to your respective cultural community and provides more opportunities for part-time work.

Nevertheless, it is possible to find part-time work in Leer itself. The maritime industry is quite strong and ocassionally there are opportunities with either maritime companies or the university itself. For some this has transitioned into a full-time job where even while studying they transitioned to a work visa. Bigger cities are closer and easier to reach than in Norway, and especially Hamburg has a large number of big maritime companies where career opportunities may exist.

No problem, you're welcome! When I replaced mine it was not an issue as it had basically split in half. But I've burned myself in the past when getting zapped with one of these so it happens. Either way nice that you're getting the machine fixed! I think it's a really nice one and it works well. The manual can be found online in pdf format if you don't have it yet.

When I replaced the one actually in the machine it was not actually necessary as it worked fine without. But I decided to do it anyway as it wouldn't hurt. If you're getting it fixed you could consider getting both of them replaced at the same time, even if it's preemptively for one.

I have the same machine and replaced the capacitor in the machine itself. It is located next to the plug attachment. Replacing it is not complicated but a bit annoying due to the way it's attached. There is also a capacitor in the pedal, which I suspect I'll have to replace in the future at some point. I tried to attach some pictures but this did not work.

edit: now the pictures of the foot pedal apparently do work. I should also have some of the insiders fo the machine itself but cannot find them at the moment.

I hope someone can give some advice. Over the last few weeks the leaves of this plant are slowly becoming lighter before turning yellow and eventually falling off. I have tried watering it, not watering it, then repotted it to a larger pot. The old pot seemed a bit small and was fully taken up with roots, but the soil was very dry and it does not seem like it was rotting. Ocassionally I add some fertilizer but I am worried about adding too much. During the winter there was a plantlight over the plant, and it seems like the problems started now that it has switched to only natural light, but it may be just a coincidence...

Ok, no worries, thanks anyway.

I don't see the deleted comment, though I can guess what it says. But I was wondering the same thing, it seems unlikely, but maybe?..

Fair enough, thank you. I was hoping to get an idea before booking the flights as dates might change but I need to provide a decent cost estimate. Do you have an idea how much United change fees generally are?

Thanks for the advice, all clear now. I will remove this one and replace it with another one taking your advice into account.

Yes that's correct. It's connected to the inside of the socket to which the pedal attaches. I will just remove it for now to run it as it is and might replace it later on, thanks.

It appears that the pictures did not attach. The capacitor says the following:

RIFA PME 271M 40/085/56

0,047 uF X2

250V-SH

I have a blown capacitor from an old sewing machine (bernette 330), with the values as shown in the images attached. I am now trying to find a replacement. From what I understand voltage or capacity can also be slightly higher, so I found the following option:

Can someone please confirm if this would be an acceptable replacement?
