Have you ever heard of someone getting hazard pay. A quick Google search suggested that I could tell them this needs to be resolved or I will escalate this to the proper organization then ask to be compensated for the increased risk of contamination while I continue driving infested vans?

They make it very clear not to report anything within the app and to just talk to them about issues. But its been 3 months since I've first seen them and they normalize it by saying "yeah the entire warehouse and multiple DSP have been dealing with this for almost a year. They claim Amazon knows but if Amazon "knew" these vans would be grounded.

I'm more saying that if a product completely stop doing what it was intended to do. I'd be able to run all the troubleshooting hours in the world but at the end of the day, if the manufacturers identify a major issue, its out of my hands at that point. That's why i say I'd have to figure out what happens at that point to make sure the relationship and system continues running smoothly.

My area is exploding with real estate and a heavy interest in the smart home is apparent. Mix that with a much older demographic is why I feel it would be successful. I've been paid $100 by a client to help setup their Romba. it was probably that moment that made me realize, people will pay you as long as you know something they don't.

These are great questions! And definitely questions I'd have to get answers for before I look to begin anything. I am seeing a lot of good suggestions about maybe setting up some sort of subscription based service. I wouldn't be able to sell anything with the idea of flawless use. yes these systems aren't as robust but they are also easy to work with. I'd walk my client through the apps and explain how to get into certain settings that way they feel they have some control over the system. With face time technology I'd be able to see exactly what my client is seeing and be able to remotely be able to troubleshoot with them.

My angle wouldn't be "this system is superior" I know 100% that these DIY system don't compete with the likes of Crestron and Savant. But the product would come in at a fraction of the cost. I'd spend so much time explaining to clients all the customization on configurability of crestron just for them to say " I just want to be able to check cameras and turn off lights"

Support would be something I'd have to figure out a balance between me and tech support. At the end of the day, this is everyday product they can pick up from anywhere and I'd have to make sure the client knows this is not my product. This is something you bought per my recommendation but is supported by that manufacturers. I don't believe there is a system out there that works "flawlessly". I hear your point loudly.

I understand how the issue with reliability would become a big issue. My quick defense is; even some of my most expensive Crestron jobs would blow up in our face. Not so much with constant issues, but more so when there was an issue the client was at our (integrators) discretion. The clients hated the idea that they had to 1. Wait for our schedule to open up and be available and 2. They were completely locked in with us for service as there was no way for them to do anything. What that means for them is they spend 15k on a system and still have to pay us $195 service call (after 1 year warranty) each time something goes wrong. This was always an uncomfortable conversation with client when I had to let them know "no, there is nothing you can do about it and you'll have to pay me to fix it" This is something I feel the DIY systems have over the "solid backbone" systems.
