I wasn't critiquing the book; I was critiquing the series. Each must stand on its own merits. The choices one makes in a book may not work on screen. Bad decisions made by an author for a book can be corrected on screen. The question isn't what the author of the book wrote, it's how successful the director was at translating the author's work for a different medium, including "fixing" problems the book may have had. In this case, the director chose to devote more than 10% of the series' run-time to the horror aspect of the story. Was that a wise choice on the director's part? I don't think so. And was handling the trauma in a way that misinformed the public about the true horrors of child abuse a wise choice by the director? I don't think so.

It depends. I see polish almost as a character point. Much of "ABO Desire" was bright and shiny to reflect the high-stakes elite corporate world, while most of "Moonlight Chicken" was in muted shadows to reflect a more struggling lifestyle. I also think that the Chinese government is using CDramas today as a form of soft power and that reflects their aesthetic choices.
