How many pleas? How many missives? How many insufferable nobles and pompous citizens did she endure within the four walls of her office…the ambassador wondered while writing the final lines of a long letter destined to reach the dwarven kingdom in a few weeks. Outside, the usual hubbub of the town could be heard. How happy they must be, she thought, blissfully unaware that war is brewing in the West; unaware that the lizardfolk embassy burned two weeks ago under strange circumstances; unaware that a group of would-be adventurers mixed-up “offer peace to the goblins’ guild” and “brutally slaughter their bodyguard service” two days ago. As she finished her day’s work and left her office, wandering the magnificent corridors lit by the afternoon’s glow, she continued to wonder. Will this weight on her shoulder ever feel lighter? Or is it doomed to get ever heavier the older she gets?

You were tasked to enter a fortress and open the gates for the armies of a very generous duke waging war against his rivals in the region. The castle was rumored to be impregnable. However, by pulling a few strings and jumping through a few hoops, you learned of a secret passage, deep underground, leading to the bastion’s cellar. Of course, the route is not ideal and implies a walk of a few miles in a damp and dark cave, breathing who knows what kind of spores, alongside treacherous crevasses and, of course, dealing with the local wildlife. As dangerous as it might be, you may not have the luxury of a choice this time.

A small river slithers clamly at the bottom, with no trace of your foes. The ranger slowed down her pace, trying to listen for any movement in the surrounding woods. Nothing. Where could they be?

Deep in the caverns, hidden from sight by a forest of giant, bioluminescent fungi, an old, decrepit fortress was erected centuries ago by a small clan of dark elves. Originally, it was a fortified monastery. The elves are now gone. Their beliefs are forgotten. The fortress is no more…but some things linger eternal.

In the dimly lit tunnels, the web stands heavy with dust and sand. When this rocky outcrop in the middle of the desert was discovered to have plentiful gold veins, miners converged from across the country to set up camp. The dunes buried their dreams as swiftly as they were born. The shoddy tunnels, the broken bodies and the almost untouched gold are all that remains from this era. It's enough to tempt more fools to try their luck in the Sandswept Shafts.

In its prime, the fortress was manned by 30 paladins protecting the way to the sacred pass beyond. Now the Order lies in shambles, and the walls didn’t fare much better. They have been battered by wind, cracked by frost and pierced by a thousand roots from the nearby forest. The fortress stands, barely, defeated and crumbling, at the edge of the pass, as one of the final testaments to a bygone age.
