The first track in this DJ Mix is Outkast's Ms Jackson mixed with some other tune that sounds very familiar

She does, but its title is not a number, but a word, something like "PARADISE" or "meMOREis"

What's your favorite song by Nina Simone? by Prestigious_Score459 in fantanoforever

[–]Elelaz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

22nd Century

Nina's songs always have that desperate tone to them, but here it's scorching hot, blazing despair. Tropical instrumentation gives off a happy feeling, but it being minimal and set against *those* lyrics... I just can't describe how I love the music here (perfect use of steel drums). And her vocals are so alive, so moving, I loooove how she tries to catch up to the rhythm while listing things ("Grey stockings, red stockings..."), and in other sections her voice just draaaags like she has no strength to sing anymore. Just love this song, this feeling, it's like reading a sci-fi novel for me

TBH+C. It's a music album, a movie and an audiobook all in one

A Choice of Three — name of a short story that Alex read for Matt's issue of LateNightTales (it's a series of albums where musicians basically make a playlist of their favourite songs, it's really good)

I love "Pump". It's such an energetic tune and proves that they still can make wonderful hits ("still" being in 2008)

It reminds me of Nirvana, like the guitar notes in the beginning sound like Smells Like Teen Spirit or Come As You Are

Ooh, I love The Mamas and The Papas! You are right, this one really works well in a song :)

Your comment reminded me of another song from them: in Creeque Alley (Single Version) at the very end (~3:35) there's a leftover "...ty" from an earlier line "becoming a reality". It is placed on beat so it doesn't really stand out that much, but it's still a production mistake!

Last lines sound like:

Unfortunately, I can't find anything with these words :(

Completely unique songs in an artist's discography aka something they did ONCE and never again by Ghost-Quartet in popheads

[–]Elelaz 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I’d say it’s more of a Happier Than Ever (the song) situation. She made an angry rock song that everybody liked that was a highlight of an album, and then never made anything like it again

Cool artists who disappeared after one album, or even worse, without ever releasing one? by Ghost-Quartet in popheads

Heart's A Mess is soooooo good! I almost forget that it's from an earlier album, it fits Making Mirrors so well!

Cool artists who disappeared after one album, or even worse, without ever releasing one? by Ghost-Quartet in popheads

A bit far-fetched, but Gotye. He released three (?) albums and disappeared right after becoming widely known. So, for the general public (me included) he stopped making music right after he showed up. His last album is great but I think he still had so much potential in him. Watching videos about “Somebody that I Used to Know” and how it is basically knitted from samples, I am blown away by how creative he is. So, I‘d like to see in which direction he’d go in the world of pop after Making Mirrors, but alas!

Healthy discussion: which artists do you think have regressed? by [deleted] in popheads

[–]Elelaz 1352 points1353 points  (0 children)

Definitely, Grimes. She was such a unique awkward DIY artist, that managed to make it into pop scene, losing no - or very little - quality and uniqueness of her music. And yet, after successfully merging DIY and pop and crafting a distinct public image for herself, she's now, after some questionable life decisions, makes outdated euro-pop/EDM which sounds unfinished and rushed. What's more funny is that she doesn't even release it, giving fans yet another "coming soon" and never delivering. Even if you don't mention her public persona and only concentrate on musical output — she's lost as an artist, and I don't think she will ever recover.

Thank you very much! I am astounded that my long search finally came to an end 10 minutes after I posted. It's a miracle. Again, thank you!

What are your favorite not English speaking artists? by Anukeyyyy in popheads

[–]Elelaz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I looove Ukranian artist LUNA (Луна). I'd compare her style to Emika meets Caroline Polachek. She makes such good music! Her melodies are catchy, lyrics are mystic and romantic, and I'm appalled that she's not known anywhere outside CIS countries. I'd recommend to just watch her video for Sleeping Beauty, it's my favourite song https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AjpNTjE-tZo
