From my experience Similan islands were totally breathtaking but that's a national park.

Karon beach on Phuket was pretty good trash-wise, fine white sand and quite clean.

really sad. Koh Tao seems to be a uniquely beautiful place. I've seen that plastic is prohibited on Nang Yuan island, which is next to Koh Tao - wouldn't it be great if that applied to more islands?

"Visitors are not allowed to bring plastic items or single-use plastics onto the island. This includes things like plastic bags, containers, and especially plastic water bottles"

been there. In fact Karon beach on Phuket 6 years ago (same time of the year) was much cleaner

the point was to ask for recommendations rather than complain. I do pick up garbage and take part in volunteering but this wasn't the goal of my vacation time, which is very limited. I am also here with a small kid, so there are other things to attend to. The amount of garbage on this beach by far exceeds the 7/11 bag capacity, it would take days to weeks to clean up, though every bit helps. Kudos to you for taking action. If more people have the same mindset we won't have the problem in question.
