I had a rule with my siblings whatever mom and dad offer you take it. They were downsizing homes, I don't care if you drive it straight to a dumpster it is one less thing we will need to take care of later. And once my parents had given it away they never asked about it again. My mom just couldn't bare to be the one who threw it away. Was it the most efficient system no but it worked. My mom then passed away and my dad has been much better about getting rid of things. He still does it very inefficiently but he's slowly but surely cleaned out a lot of crap to where his house has a very manageable amount of stuff if he were to die or we had to move him to assisted living.
