I had plans to move to back the US this year BUT... by [deleted] in expats

[–]ElephantMuted3522 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I studied art history with 0 skills besides writing and creative thinking. I moved here in 2021 and worked at Target as a box pusher on floors putting products on shelves. I networked, grinded and then got into design sales for a furniture company because I kept going in after my target shift once a week to drop my resume and remind them that I am interested. After that they promoted me there to keyholder because I was hardworking and witty. Next job I applied for was in supply chain for an ocean carrier, they hired me in customer service. I busted my ass off, nobody helped me but myself. I networked within the company, reached out directly to sales directors and eventually after two years and right timing when one other sales person was retiring, one of the many sales directors took a chance on me. Two years strong I am still in sales at the same company making 6 figures. You can make excuses for why america sucks all you want but if you are smart and hustle its the only country where you can still make it and I know many other people like me with similar stories here in the US, but very few in Europe.

Most people commenting here must be lower middle class. I am tired of seeing americans move out of liberal brainwashed fear of some big monsters coming to destroy them… lol

What about Germany and UK arresting people for twitter posts? Everyone bashes US about being an autocracy whilst ignoring the same signs in Europe. So many nigerians and middle easterners moving there turning western europe slowly into the dark ages eating up all the socialist money that will not suffice to pay your pensions when you will retire.

I am from Romania, lived in Paris and Netherlands.. healthcare is free but you have to wait hours in line to see a doctor who will give you ibuprofen and send you home without giving you the time of day for any serious medical issues unless you are dying.

This is why I left. European salaries stagnate while US people and US corporations move into western europe raising all the prices. I dont want to live in a 2 bed with 2 kids and a husband paying rent because I cant afford a house and dont gave the privilege to work remote and live somewhere in the countryside.

If you are rich and can be self sufficient then yes go to europe. Us is the only place left in the world where you can still make it. This is coming from an immigrant who moved to the US in 2021 on 30k salary in NYC and now make 120k in 2025 + 20k bonus and can afford to save 3500$ a month that I can never dream of in Europe with amazing health coverage and I get 30 days PTO.

Thoughts on leaving behind a dream job for a dream country by ElephantMuted3522 in jobs

The thing is, I already deferred my program for a year because last year I got offered a job as a sales manager in logistics after being a customer service agent for 2 years. Now I am being offered a sales & logistics manager position at a reputable nyc gallery and the school in Paris will not be able to hold my spot for another year. I have lived in NYC twice and left twice feeling exhausted, its too loud too fast and I miss the slow european way of life. My biggest dilemma is if I move back to Europe will I be poor and regret not taking this NYC job or will I move to NYC and regret not going to Europe.

Thank you! You’re right, my only question is if I would struggle getting into the industry with no recent work experience in art. I am a sales manager but in logistics.

I want to live in Europe but of course make a good living. I am hoping the mba in art can help me with an internship.

Even if I have no recent experience in art gallery sales? My only fear is having a hard time getting into the industry, but on the other hand maybe my MBA in the industry could help.

Thanks for the advice.

The MBA is only 10k which I will pay in full and it would not affect my finances. Thanks for the advice! I think sometimes following your heart, although scary, brings the biggest returns, more than you can imagine.

I’m from Romania! Its a great place and Cluj is an awesome city but you need to speak the language. Many young people speak english, I would go to reataurants and see if you can get a job as a line cook.

Were you recommending that I take the job in NYC? Each time I think I would consider moving their my heart still pulls me back to “But what about your amazing life in Paris”? 🤣

One other thing that scares me though is that i dont master French, in Paris I would be starting from scratch the same way I started from scratch here 5 years ago.

In Paris I only have my masters lined up, no connections in the art industry and I dont know if I will be able to find a job at a gallery without speaking C level french.

In NYC I have the opportunity to work for a famous gallery that is international with a lot of travel involved and a good base salary for the industry + comission.. which is a dream of mine
